Officers and wives greeted guests in a formal receiving line led by Commander Charles Schneider and other leaders.
Washington Oct 15 The department of agriculture chemists report cornstalks can replace wood fiber to make five grades of paper at least 50 percent cheaper. First samples by Dr Bristol show white paper from stalk shells and yellow from pith, with longer fibers like linen. Large scale use could slash prices, benefiting farmers and industry.

Chicago Oct 15 Professor J Laurence Laughlin head of the University of Chicago political economy department attacked the fallacy of guaranteed bank deposits before a banquet of Illinois bankers with over 1000 delegates in Music Hall. The anticipated officer election did not arise, the ticket led by James McKinney and Oscar G Forman was elected, while resolutions were postponed for further discussion. The event closed with a unified mood as younger men remained in the background.
