Taft spoke at Knox College campus as part of the Lincoln Douglas debate anniversary events in Galesburg Illinois. He traveled from Chicago with brief stops in Metta and Kewanee where he addressed crowds. Other speakers included Representative Prince Stephen A Douglas Stevenson Senator Hopkins and Theodore A Burton.
In Chicago on an October day a former street car employee shot his wife while she held their two year old. He fled amid a chase by passengers and killed himself with the same revolver as they closed in. The deed appears to be the result of jealousy.

In Chattanooga on October 8 a convention of party organizers proclaimed the birth of a new liberal party. The platform calls for woman suffrage direct federal taxation and the initiative and referendum. It denounces Bryan Taft Roosevelt and Hearst.

Chicago October 8 The Rock River conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church adopted resolutions attacking Speaker Cannon for alleged obstruction of action to curb interstate liquor traffic at its final session yesterday.
Gas leaks into sleeping rooms of an Italian boarding house in Waterbury Connecticut on October 8 killing four young Italian men. Eight others and two women were found unconscious or partly so from fumes but later recovered.
