The Cherry Illinois mine disaster leaves 160 to 168 bodies found on the third level stairway and vein as workers suffocated by black damp after failed air supply. Survivors wrote a diary of hopeful struggle amid rising water and deteriorating air.
Colonel Edward E. Britton and Frederick H. Schroeder, convicted officials of the Eagle Savings and Loan in Brooklyn, were taken to Sing Sing to begin embezzlement sentences. Britton drawn 14 months to four years six months, Schroeder 12 months to four years six months.
A half of a large split meteor lit the night sky over Montgomery Alabama around 7 30 Monday evening. The fragment struck the earth near McCulloch station in East Alabama causing tremors that resembled an earthquake and sent residents in a wide area fleeing in fear. The meteor split with tails flying east and southwest as it fell to the ground.
New York November 24 The National Civic Federation unanimously reelects all its officers. Seth Low remains president with vice presidents including Samuel Gompers Ellison Smythe Nahum Bach elder and Benjamin Wheeler. Isaac N. Seligman continues as treasurer Ralph M. Easley is chairman of the executive council.
Funeral services for David A. De Armond and his grandson, both killed in a recent fire at Butler Missouri, will be held Friday afternoon. Prominent figures sent condolences as the bereaved family copes with the loss. In Springfield Illinois, Judge Roland A. Russell of Bloomington was today named superintendent of the Pontiac reformatory.
Governor Marshall received a request from Sheriff Todd of Lawrence county for troops to be sent to Bedford amid a quarrymen strike. About 2,000 workers are on strike. the dispute stems from divisions between two stone cutter organizations.
Portland reports widespread flooding as rivers and creeks rise above banks. Willamette River area sees major damage with docks submerged and pulpmills disrupted. Hood River communications restored after two days, and several bridges along Hood River and Columbia River affected by landslides and high water.
Washington announces Benjamin S. Cable of Chicago will be assistant secretary of commerce and labor. James Freeman Curtis of Boston named assistant secretary of the treasury. Cable succeeds Ormsby McHarg, who retired to practice law in New York. Curtis, Harvard graduate and former Massachusetts assistant attorney general, is now Boston’s assistant district attorney and 1899 intercollegiate golf champion.
Chicago voters chose William J. Moxley a Republican to represent the Sixth Illinois district succeeding Lorimer. Moxley led with 14,594 votes while Carl L. Barnes tallied 8,317 and Frank H. Ryan 6,614. Barnes and Ryan were independent and Democrat challengers respectively.
A Las Vegas special reports Chief Justice Mills received a telegram from President Taft offering him the New Mexico governorship. The Albuquerque dispatch notes Mills is the favored appointee with Taft extending the position.
New York November 24 state records the completion of a massive bookkeeping effort with the payment of 10,351,027 dollars to gas consumers owed a 20 cent rebate. The project audited 1,335,575 vouchers, issued checks, reviewed thousands of ledgers, and used 2,500,000 postage stamps with many envelopes and forms. Over 1,000 bookkeepers and clerks worked 38 weeks.
Shelby Ohio November 24 the first trial divorce was granted at Mansfield on the suggestion of Judge Cummins the decree not to be recorded until reconciliation or its impossibility. Walter D Hanna city clerk of Shelby gains custody of two children and Hanna seeks to end her infatuation with Samuel Robb.
In Lxyfield Illinois on November 24 Governor Deneen plans a special session call stressing registration and election law amendments following the supreme court decision. Judge Rinaker of Cook County urged inclusion of these amendments. Deneen has not yet replied and will not detail policy. A separate Springfield dispatch notes miners and labor leaders pressing for new mine fire protection laws in the call.
London November 24 government plans for an early prorogation of the commons were upset as the Lords met and 80 peers expressed a wish to speak on the budget bill. Debate will continue into next week and the expected prorogation by month end is now unlikely.
H J Clarke of Grand Rapids Michigan a millionaire furniture and lumber dealer died in Globe Arizona after a brief illness He had come to San Carlos with other capitalists to study an irrigation project and was preparing to leave for the coast when he suffered acute indigestion
New York report says Dr. Cook will submit records to the University of Copenhagen to prove he reached the pole on April 21 1908. Cook's secretary Walter Lonsdale will sail tomorrow for Copenhagen to deliver the documents.
An American group faces danger in Nicaragua with several individuals held in prison. One person accompanies him as plans emerge that he will travel to Copenhagen on December 15, with a university announcement anticipated before the new year.

Washington on November 24 Peary and Wellman met for the first time since their pole quests at a reception hosted by the National Press Club. Wellman said he was glad to greet Peary, the only man to reach the pole, and Peary expressed gratification and arranged to discuss their arctic experiences.
In Chicago on November 24 a theater panic was averted when theater attaches restrained a policeman who rushed into the foyer shouting fire. The stage announced a neighboring fire. the audience was dismissed briefly, the fire proved inconsequential, and the performance resumed.
New York reports a 50 pound Thanksgiving mince pie baked in a Newark shop for President Taft. It took six hours and required several pie experts to supervise. The 25 inch by three inch pie will be transported to Washington by a Bakers' union committee.
Orra F. Havill editor and publisher of Havills was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail for libeling ex-State's Attorney George B. Ramsey. Havill accused Ramsey of taking a $500 bribe in a murder case and of corruption. Judge W. H. Green imposed the sentence. appeal lies on a writ of error.
In Cincinnati on November 24, Charles L. Warriner, jailed and indicted for embezzlement as treasurer of the Big Four railroad, issued a formal statement through his attorney denying any other railroad employee’s connection to the shortage.
In Peoria Illinois on November 24 1910 congressman D B Alexander head of the waterways committee and party spent Monday night aboard the US steamer Pearl at the Illinois river station and then proceeded to La Salle on their tour. The Astor yacht puzzle is solved as John Jacob Astor and party reach New York aboard the insular line steamer Harry Luckenbach from San Juan Porto Rico. The Home Stake Mining Company mine near Lead South Dakota faces a potential 2500 miners strike and possible closure tonight. James I Davenport named commissioner to replace Warner in Richmond Indiana with pension duties.
In Anniston on November 24, a posse captured Ray Rolston, a Black man accused of assaulting Mrs. W C Cheatwood near Edwardsville. He was riddled with bullets and killed, while Mrs Cheatwood remains in critical condition. The event follows reports of the assault on Cheatwood, wife of a local farmer.
Manila on November 2 W Cameron Forbes of Massachusetts took the oath as governor general of the Philippines in the marble hall of Ayunts oiente, a former Spanish conference room. He delivered his inaugural address as the fifth and youngest American governor general since civil government began.
Scottsburg Indiana November 24 Scott County voted dry by a majority of 375 in a local option election yesterday. The county previously allowed drinkers in some areas but shifted to a dry status after polls closed.
