Washington November 17 St Patrick's Catholic church will host a notable Thanksgiving service with President Taft Vice President Sherman cabinet diplomatic corps and Supreme Court members attending a pan American celebration. A solemn high Mass will be celebrated in the presence of Cardinal Gibbons Monsignor Falconio and other papal delegates.
In Elgin Illinois on November 17 13 year old Gaza Metzler fell into a corn shredder while feeding it and was killed before power could be shut off. William Schremm of Schaumburg lost an arm when his jacket caught on the belt and the machine pulled him in before it could be stopped.
John M. Briggs, an ice dealer from Cocymans, New York, testified in court that he once chased Charles W. Morse, former head of the American Ice company, for two weeks with a gun after losing heavily in Morse’s speculation. The revelation occurred as Briggs answered questions from counsel for the American Ice company.
San Francisco reports Charles N Crittenton of New York a prominent founder of Florence Crittenton Rescue Homes for Girls died of pneumonia aged 76 after a week of illness. He established 73 homes in the United States and several abroad in Japan and China, named for his daughter Florence.
LaPorte Indiana November 17 coroners jury returns verdict of accidental drowning in Hudson lake. Mrs Hunter Dresden of Buchanan Michigan drowned while boating with husband last month. Collision near Dayton on C H and D left fireman and brakeman dead while passengers escaped unharmed. Berlin reports a great snowstorm halting wires across Germany.
New York November 17 a report that Western Union would fall under a close community of interest with Postal Telegraph and the telephone company was bolstered when telephone officials acknowledged Postal Telegraph was the largest single stock holder in Western Union.
New York reports indicate prosecutors may indict several U S government weighers tied to the American Sugar Refining frauds. Edwin I Anderson a former docks superintendent claims to have given key information to officials and seeks about 1 000 000 in compensation. He says investigations show government fraud of at least 500 000 annually at his refinery and describes ongoing scrutiny and bodyguard measures.
Fire at Major General Grant's home caused minor damage. Grant and Mrs. Grant climbed down a ladder after escaping through a window as firemen raised a ladder to help several servants descend to safety.

Salzer sues in U S court for Oregon over 6600 acres traded for cash and Salzer holdings, deeds reportedly kept by Mrs McKinley then diverted. McKinley promises restitution. several La Crosse figures implicated. In New York, Charles W. Eliot retires from Carnegie Foundation. Van Hise elected to succeed him.
Des Moines Iowa November 17 The Iowa supreme court held that a private business concern under state statute may legally refuse to serve a Negro. The court later refused to hear a motion to grant Leroy Ware a stay from prison while pending penitentiary freedom proceedings.
Mrs Augusta E Stetson of New York faced 26 hours of secret conference with the board of the First Church of Christ Boston in the inner council rooms over alleged mental malpractice. She issued a statement saying she bows to the directors verdict and will unite with those who condemned her.
The Iowa Federation admitted charter violations and voted to restore in compliance with federation law. Cleveland Toledo Davenport Cedar Rapids Milwaukee and San Francisco centers must align with federation laws to maintain unity. AFL executive council endorses steel industry investigation and tariff suspension talk and sets Labor Sunday observance with labor temples support.
Cincinnati Nov 11 The National Municipal league held a business session and heard papers with billboard regulation as the central topic. The league elected Charles J Bonaparte of Maryland as president, Clinton Rogers Woodruff of Philadelphia as secretary, and reelected J Horace McFarland and Richard Watrous of Harrisburg as president and secretary of the Civic association.

Warner Dodds of Watertown New York reported his father and two brothers were shot and killed while deer hunting near Channing Marquette Michigan on November 17. Police are investigating the incident.
A rush telegram from F A Hart, snowbound yesterday at Emerson Minnesota, asks that his furs be sent there immediately. Hart is bound for the north pole route but will spend the hard winter at Winnipeg handling heavy holiday traffic for the Burlington road. He sends greetings to Rock Island friends from the frozen north.
The local Aerie of Eagles held a regular meeting on Twenty first street and Fourth avenue. Nominations for officers for the coming year were made and the election will occur at the next meeting on Tuesday December 7 at the home. A social session followed the business portion.
Chicago reports Governor Veasey of South Dakota opened the national farm land congress urging rural improvement to attract a better class to farm life. A Missouri pastor and an incident at Marysville are noted, along with Carlisle's improving condition in New York.
