New Haven Connecticut November 4 Mrs Bessie Wakefield and James Plew were sentenced to be hanged on March 4 for the murder of Wakefield’s husband. It marks a rare execution date in Connecticut as no woman prisoner has been hanged since 1786.
Rev. Oscar Johnson a former Swedish Evangelical missionary to China was found dead at his Chicago home with a gas stove burner lit, the room likely filled with smoke. He had traveled from Providence Rhode Island to study and planned to return to the Orient as a medical missionary. He was 32 and a bachelor. Meanwhile, Elmo Winkepeck, a Lexington farmer, was fatally shot by his cousin Owen Jordan of St. Louis during a rabbit hunt.
The Fur ness line freighter Manchester Commerce struck a gigantic iceberg at 2 am Sunday 100 miles east of Belle Isle during a heavy storm. The ship arrived in St Johns in a damaged condition with 6,000 tons of cargo and 40 crew. Repairs will take about two months.

John M. Roach resigns after forty years in street railway work. Henry A. Blair elected to succeed him as president of Chicago Railways Co. Roach began as a Chicago conductor in 1872. New York officials meet to devise efficient customs collection methods representing 49 districts.
Phoenixville, Pa. Nov. 4. George Gay of Blackington, Mass., former Ursinus college star, died today from a broken neck suffered in a football game Saturday.
