Washington observed Decoration Day with parades and graveside tributes led by the Potomac department. President Roosevelt delivered the main address praising unity and national service. Similar ceremonies occurred in Chicago Kansas City and New York with memorial addresses and confederate monuments unveiled.
An Associated Press report from Fort de France dated May 29 describes George J. Kavanagh, an unattached newspaper man, accompanying geologist Professor Robert T. Hill on an ascent within a mile of Mont Pelee. He photographed, sketched, and survived amid ash, heat, and two great rifts, reaching Morne Rouge before retreating as the volcano erupted violently.
In Balliet v Balliet Judge Munger ruled it immaterial if proceeds funded moral or immoral ventures. Washington May 30 The executive committee of the Democratic congressional campaign committee met with chairman Ben T Cable and Judson Harmon among others to discuss plans to push trusts and tariffs as key campaign issues. A seven member subcommittee was formed to study the topics for a future house caucus while Cable will direct western headquarters in Chicago and Griggs manage national HQ in Washington.
St Louis welcomed Samuel Clemens as he traveled west, with George Tans delivering greeting remarks. Clemens visited relatives in Mannybal and received a cordial reception from Merchants’ Exchange members before a university venue planned to confer a Litt. degree. The piece notes a push from Terre Haute merchants to influence street railway strikes in favor of workers, with similar actions anticipated in other towns, and mentions coal bid issues delaying Brooklyn bridge coal supply and King Edward’s birthday celebrations in London.
Senate committee heard Col A L Wagner describe concentration camps in the Philippines. He said camps arranged natives by village kept old neighbors near, with a 300 to 500 yard free zone and a dead line beyond which crossing could invite shooting though orders aimed to avoid harm. He claimed camps protected natives from Ladrones and aided rice collection to starve rebels, and noted burning of noncombatant property was only justifiable when it could not be separated from hostiles. General Buencamino, Aguinaldo's secretary of war, praised US rule and will testify soon.
The remains of the late Henry Leavenworth were brought from the east and reinterred today at the National Cemetery in Fort Leavenworth, marking the final section of the veteran officer's legacy.
A man calling himself Patrick Harrington was arrested in Fort Dodge Iowa on May 30 as a suspect in the December murder of Constable Smith at Chelsea Tama county. He reportedly belonged to a railroad laborers gang linked to the crime and a separate bank robbing gang active in Iowa last winter. He was taken to Tama City for custody. Meanwhile Marshalltown held a May 30 convention for post office workers, organizing the Iowa State Letter Carriers association and establishing a state postoffice clerks branch. In Detroit Michigan on May 30 the Democratic state central committee set July 50 for the Democratic convention in Detroit.
