Washington May 5 Secretary Hay and Lord Pauncefote signed a seven month extension of the Hay Pauncefote canal treaty delaying ratification amid belief Congress will not secure restrictions this session. The extension lasts until McKinley’s term ends and affects exchange of ratifications.
General Otis reports Manila May 5 that April captured artillery rifles and stores marked a steady advance. American losses were thirteen enlisted men killed and twenty-seven wounded, while enemy losses reached 721 killed wounded and captured. Leading Filipinos express confidence pacification will end the war soon as insurgents surrender.
United States troops landed two companies of the 29th infantry on Marinduque and have already taken four towns without opposition. Few armed insurgents remain in the mountains. One company to garrison the island, then Masbate. Cable to the southern islands broken. Meade sailed home with Otis and two aides. Dewey celebration ends in St. Louis with a large parade. Fire damages the Yarpsih works in Staten Island and Glasgow reports a $150,000 town fire.

Reports show Boer forces retreating under action by Hunter and French cavalry while Spion Kop dispatches spark a Commons debate on war dispatch publication and Buller’s reports.
Chicago reports that Cullom's managers claim Carter delegates in Cook county will back Cullom, giving him a majority at the state convention and control of the credentials committee. Hancey supporters contest the count, arguing Carter's delegates are instructed and that Cullom should gain a committee majority through the key districts. Other items note Grand Army officers elected in Illinois, mining strikes, and local civic affairs.
In Chicago delegates form a 15 member committee to report a plan uniting the Freedman's Aid and Southern Educational societies with the Home Department Missionary society into a single Home Missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The panel will report next Friday.
