Gen Piet Joubert Dead Prominent Transvaal Leader

Victor of Majuba Hill and former vice president of the Transvaal Gen Piet Joubert dies after a stomach illness at about 11 30 p m in Pretoria at age around 69. He led Transvaal forces, defeated Colley in 1881 and served as president in 1883 84 during Kruger's absence. Mourning grips Pretoria and news wires recount his long service and role in the republic.

Maccabees Entertain at Y M C A Event

Black Hawk Tent No 146 Knights of the Maccabees staged a concert and literary entertainment at the Y M C A auditorium. The Sylvan quartet and other performers drew a near full house despite poor weather. Louisa Henrichs from Chicago addressed the crowd and announced plans to organize a Lady Maccabees shive. The degree team in regalia closed the program.

London dispatch from the Odia bureau cites massive Russian mobilization of nearly 250 000 troops and a ready Black Sea squadron as tensions with the Ottoman Empire rise. It warns that a stubborn stance by Turkey, aided by Germany, could spark serious complications in Asia Minor, with Russian garrisons along the Caucasus and Armenian front strengthened for action.

Goebel assassination case unfolds with partial confessions

In Frankfort Kentucky yesterday W H Culton waived examination and remained held over to circuit court after a two hour Capitol hotel conference with prosecutors. Reports of a confession proved inaccurate and Culton provided only information of varying importance. Auditor clerk Youtsey, jailed as an accessory, sought prosecutors to declare innocence and reveal knowledge, while Towers defense waived further examination and Powers was bound over to the grand jury. In St Petersburg the Russian squadron that recently visited Chemulpo has reached Port Arthur.

Stricken Dumb After Killing Partner at 107 Ewing Street

Vito Paoletto a saloon keeper, shot and killed his partner Frank Antonio Giavito. Five shots fired with Giavito facing away. Paoletto later found unable to speak despite efforts by police and doctors. Reported as a sudden loss of voice with no vocal-tract injury.

Hearing Macrum Before House Foreign Affairs Committee

Former U S consul to Pretoria Charles E Macrum testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee about alleged British indignities during his tenure and claimed proofs of mail tampering by a censor The State Department said Britain apologized for the censor action but did not demand an apology from Britain The report notes Lord Pauncefote disavowed the censor’s action and that the mail transfer caused congestion in Cape Town Robbers blew a safe at the O F Alland bank in Hanlontown Iowa stealing 2000 dollars
