New York March 27 Emmanuel L Phillips president of the Union Refrigerator Transit company of Milwaukee was awarded damages of $15 000 by a jury in a United States court in his suit against the McClure Publishing company The case stemmed from alleged libelous statements in McClure's Magazine by Ray Stannard Baker claiming his firm had received unlawful commissions

Richard C. Horne was acquitted of murdering H J Groves managing editor of the Kansas City Post by a jury in the criminal court last night. The verdict said General Horne was insane when he shot Groves and has not fully recovered, and commits him to an asylum.

Albany March 27 General Stewart L Woodford president of the National Hughes league says Taft cannot win New York next November If he cannot carry the state he cannot carry the nation He backs Hughes as a Lincoln like figure and notes financiers have largely backed Taft though wealth will not nominate the ticket He asserts New York supports Hughes above all others and will help elect a republican president with Hughes leading the ticket
Washington March 27 the senate adopted an amendment to the Aldrich currency bill requiring four fifths of the 15 percent reserve of banks to be kept in vaults of banks outside reserve cities and allowing one third of that amount to be in securities.
In Liverpool Duke Abruzzi dismissed reports of an engagement to Miss Katherine Elkins. He said he could reveal nothing and suggested announcements would come from another source. The Lusitania arrived from New York this morning as the duke declined to speak further.
