John C. Maybray and nine companions were sentenced to two years in the penitentiary and $10,000 fines each for fraudulent mail use in a large fixed race swindle. Others, Bert Shores and William Marsh, got 15 months and $100 fines. Wintford Harris and Frank Scott, six months and $100 fines. The trial ended with a guilty verdict for Maybray and 13 associates. Robert B E L Goddard dissented. Mrs Maybray cried. Maybray exchanged handshakes with jurors.
Chicago March 21 United States District Attorney Sims files indictments against the National Packing company and its subsidiaries for anti trust violations. A bill in equity seeks dissolution of the alleged trust naming Armour Swift Morris and related corporations and aims to restore independent packing houses to original owners if successful. No individuals named. The action follows prior suits and cites a March 18 1903 formation of the National Packing company with control over competitors to destroy competition.
