Kerry, for the Senate Committee on Commerce, presents a report opposing the ship subsidy bill. The minority dispute the majority’s predictions and facts, calling the bill cruel, unjust, vicious, and class illation with no good purpose.
In Omaha on March 15 the Women's Club faced censure from the city library board over a seven foot Diana and the Stag sculpture. The board demanded future consultation before such gifts are displayed, and club officials advised transferring its benefits to the high school rather than the children's room.
Berlin reports that Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute teachers trained natives in German West Africa to grow cotton. Grading on Bremen exchange shows African cotton above American middling. Des Moines report states the joint scale committee of the United Mine Workers and Operators of Iowa adjourned this morning and will reconvene next Monday. The joint convention will also resume then, with the full week likely to pass before an agreement is reached.

In a United States circuit court decision March 15, Windimuller sought to bar Spirits Distributing from voting its stock on a proposed dissolution. The judge ruled guarantees on dividends apply only while the company exists, allowing all stockholders equal vote. a scheme to block the process was noted as foiled. In East St Louis, a pair eloped amid a family dispute as others pursued the couple after a planned wedding was halted.
Berlin reports deny that Dr. Von Holleben the German ambassador will be recalled or furloughed. A German official confirms Von Holleben remains in service. A Washington AP correspondent notes early print mentions of Von Holleben interfering in the 1896 election and claims of proof submitted to the U.S. State Department with no response.
The secretary of state licenses the Wester Illinois Railway Company with principal offices in Galesburg. The $100,000 stock is to back a line from Dahinda in Knox county through Knox Stark Marshall and Putnam counties.
Pittsburg March 15 The painters strike was settled today by a compromise agreement. The rate will be 40 cents per hour or an eight hour day. Eighteen strikers will return to work at once.
In New York on March 15 General Benjamin Tracy former secretary of the navy collapsed while in Kings County in Brooklyn. The report notes his sudden illness during official duties. Nearby, a note mentions the largest cast bronze statue in the world depicting Peter the Great at St. Petersburg weighing 1,100 tons.
Madrid reports threats tied to agitation for reform, prompting the war minister to keep recently discharged soldiers with their colors. The queen regent appoints Sagasta to a new cabinet. In Michigan a well-to-do farmer near Mt. Vernon, Henry Barnaby, was found hanging in his barn after facing reverses and despondency.
Washington March 15 William Jennings Bryan returned to Washington from Culpeper Virginia where he lectured Thursday night. He met prominent Democrats about the congressional campaign and other party matters. Henry Watterson was seen on the floor with Richardson of Tennessee as the Democratic congressional committee debated reorganization and timing. Thirty four states were represented and a next meeting two weeks hence will name a chairman secretary and assistant secretary. The present chairman Richardson will act temporarily with Zenor and Norris to contact state committees. Cuban Tariff Conferees Don't Agree Washington March 15 The Cuban tariff conferees held a session from 2 to 5 pm with Payne reporting no conclusion reached. They adjourned with good prospects for agreement but form remaining in doubt.
A fire near Monroe Wisconsin destroyed property valued at about 125000, gutting nearly every east side building on Main street except one. Two hotels two large stores a bank the city hall and several homes burned, with 75000 insured while spontaneous combustion is suspected. Separately in Denver St Vincent's orphan asylum on the northern outskirts burned raising questions about whether all inmates escaped.
In Cleveland Fairmount Manufacturing powder mixing department an explosion killed a girl named Anna Fritz and injured seven others who fled from second story windows. The accident caused about 10000 dollars in losses. In Columbus Kansas two Laflin Rand powder works mills exploded at noon, killing Walter Reid and injuring several workers with extensive property damage.
Whit ecap notice sent to J B Smiley of the Galesburg Enterprise threatens him with tar and feathers and a river ride if he does not leave town. Smiley regards it as nothing, continuing to his law office in Battle Creek.
Westbound Nickel Plate No. 1 crashed into an open switch near Knox Indiana injuring engineer A A Schwind fireman Jim Dalton baggage master Alexander and mail clerk William Browe. The baggage coach was torn apart and the engine with six freight cars piled in a blaze.
