Mattoon Illinois March 12 Dr Harold Nomalte was arrested yesterday on a charge of murder and jailed without bail until the case comes up. The county coroner's inquest returned a verdict of death by suicide and requested examination of Nomalte's sanity. The indictment lists two counts including murder of his wife Alice Ronalds and another charge of assault, with a death penalty likely sought in one count.
The county board defeated a motion by Supervisor Fisher to delay further jail site action until Monday to allow public input, 21 to 15. Supervisor Hanna said no more public hearing was needed. The minority report proposing locating the jail west of the courthouse facing Fourteenth Street failed 31 to 5, leaving only Supervisor Cool’s plan to place the new building on the current site.
Joseph Fish, wealthly insurance adjuster, is acquitted for a second time after four hours of jury deliberation in a Chicago arson case. Judge John M. O’Connor presided as Fish left in a limousine toward Prairie Avenue home.
A piece of man’s rib was implanted into John Borgus’s skull at St Luke’s hospital after a December streetcar crash crushed his skull. The rib is expected to grow and mend the damaged bone, with doctors noting a complete recovery potential. Soldiers Not Affected by Rise. New York March 12. Washington DC March 12 Fifty senators and representatives with their families will leave in late April for a 22 day stay in the Hawaiian Islands under the auspices of Prince Kalaniazacie, Hawaiian delegate. Expenses to be borne by Hawaiians. Among the party will be Representatives Mans and Copley of Liliwela and Senator Cummins.
Springfield March 12 the senate adopted Ettelson resolution creating a rules committee of five Republicans and four Democrats with 23 Republicans backing. Democrats filibustered as long as 17 hours. Rep. Landee named education chair under plan to cut standing committees from 51 to 36. Other measures include civil service for county workers, eight hour day for public employees, salary caps for appellate clerks, and banning armed guards.
March 12 Newport News reports indicate the German auxiliary cruiser Eitel Friederich in dry dock is in very bad condition and likely to be interned. Assistant Secretary Peters told the president the ship is utterly unfit for sea and ordered sworn statements from the Frye wreck crew. Officials expect Germany to offer full reparations for the Frye and cargo.
Peoria March 12 Plans of Newton C Dougherty former superintendent of Peoria schools to hasten his entrance into Joliet penitentiary and win a governor’s pardon went awry. Instead of Joliet he was taken to Peoria county jail to await a second mittimus. The first directing sheriff to turn him over to the state prison warden disappeared. Japan Modifies Demands. Peking March 12 Japan has modified its demands on China after occupying Kiao-Chow. Danville Illinois Charles Baker of Barnhill found guilty of robbing the post office and sentenced to four years in Davenport prison Arch Nixon jailed after plea of guilty to similar sentence.
The Soviet government has ordered 10,000 tons of light weight steel rails from American mills with portions placed with Carnegie Steel and Cambria Steel. Russia and France have also ordered 15,000 tons of barbed wire worth over a half million dollars.

Davenport Loco Works officials today refused a large war order for shrapnel from the British government for patriotic reasons. Details of the order size were not disclosed. Also reported are wheat storage estimates, editor illness, a Newark triple death, and Secretary McAdoo's appendicitis operation.
Washington reports Governor Capper telegraphed President Wilson warning foot and mouth disease spreading threatens Kansas livestock industry. Chief Melvin of the bureau of animal industry to take charge. Wilson also intervenes in eastern Ohio coal strike, consulting with Secretary Wilson and coal operators on settlement methods.
In Aurora Illinois on March 12 the Emma Peterson murder case again focuses on clairvoyant Professor Vail. Elizabeth Bradley says she joined Miss Peterson at the seer before her death. Chief Michels notes a suspect named Professor Wall who fled when arrest neared for drug smuggling. Howard Basse, aide to Professor Vail, was arrested in Chicago with an Aurora woman and later released on bonds.
Montreal march 12 a blaze believed caused by a tossed lighted match in Justice Guerins court room damaged the courthouse for about 200000 and killed the messenger j gleason who collapsed from smoke in a hospital. the fire destroyed important court records and caused excitement in the courts.
Passengers and crew on the American steamer Almirante reported a fleet of nine British transports at Kingston Jamaica ready to convey troops to Europe. Four British war ships accompanied the transports and the Australian cruiser Sydney, noted for sinking the Emden, was among the warships present.
