Democrats succeed in defeating a permanent tariff board bill while advancing supply measures at the last moment. The bills receive President Taft's signature as Cannon formally retires from service.
Washington reports the 61st Congress adjourned with big appropriation bills signed by the president. Tariff board and Sulloway pension measures were withdrawn after filibusters. no vote on Canadian reciprocity. House turmoil included spectacle around Speaker Cannon and a rallying chorus of patriotic songs.
Fair tonight with increasing clouds Sunday. Temperatures near freezing tonight, 7 a.m. reading 27. Highest yesterday 46, wind 5 mph. No precipitation, humidity 55 at 7 p.m. and 67 at 7 a.m. Mississippi stage slowly falling from Dubuque to Muscatine. Astronomical notes: sun sets 5 51, rises 6 24, moon sets 118 p.m. with moon Saturn conjunction.
Senate passed the sundry civil and the post office appropriation bills. Debates trimmed the Macquines rate and modified the Shester rural free delivery routes plan. House marked many local bills awaiting Senate action on appropriations. Conferees worked on such bills. Captain Robert E Peary received recognition for discovering the north pole and was made a rear admiral on the retired list.
Washington March 4 a special house committee report states there has been no improper influence for or against ship subsidy legislation. The inquiry concludes the charges reflecting on members of Congress are wholly false and the report was presented to the house today.
New York March 4 Charged writer Broughton Brandenburg found guilty of forging and cashing a fifty dollar check tied to a sales article alleged to be by Grover Cleveland. He was sentenced to Sing Sing prison for two to four and a half years. Jurors deliberated only 15 minutes.
Senator Bailey of Texas resigns from the United States Senate. The reason given is unclear though reports mention approval by Democrats of the Arizona Constitution. Bailey offered no formal comment as the departure becomes official from Washington paging March 4.
Edward F Dunne filed a contest with County Judge Owens to dispute Carter Harrison Jr as the Democratic mayoral nominee. After canvassing 30 of 35 wards Harrison’s lead shrank from 1,556 to 1,433, leaving Dunne a path to an independent bid if he gathers 6,600 nonvoters by March 9.
In Villisca Iowa on March 4 the Atlantic Northern and Southern railroad is tied up by unpaid laborers in a labor dispute. The halted operations affect freight and passenger movement as workers press for overdue wages. Local officials report stalled shipments and potential delays across regional routes.
Senator Bailey announced his resignation citing opposition to the Democratic Senate vote approving Arizona’s constitution. Governor Colquitt refused to accept the resignation, while a Texas railroad line faced 100 unpaid workers and halted all trains as laborers barricaded the tracks delaying the Atlantic line completed Dec 31.
Divorcee Cornelia Baxter McKee Tevis of Pittsburgh files suit in Paris against Nedjib Melhamme Pasha once a minister of Sultan Abdul Hamid. She alleges he swindled her by taking jewels stocks and bonds placed in his care to cover her debts and later paid herself an advance of $60 000 before selling them.
Congress passes amended bill to place Captain Robert E Peary on the retired list of the corps of civil engineers with the rank of rear admiral and to extend congressional thanks to the North Pole explorer The measure becomes law upon presidential signature Peary retires with rank backdated to April 6 1909 and the highest pay for that grade
Honolulu reports two more cholera deaths, bringing the current outbreak total to 15 cases with 13 fatalities. All victims are native Hawaiians. The Sierra crew from San Francisco is barred from landing, and crews of the Mongolian and Zealandia liners are not allowed ashore in port.
Danville Illinois March reports a wealthy farmer Frank White found shot in doorway at his home. Mrs White says burglars killed him while coroner says death by own action. Investigations continue as authorities seek clarity on the fatal event near Danville.
Washington March 1 President Taft called a special session of Congress to convene April 4. The action followed the Senate's failure to pass the Canadian reciprocity resolution, which had cleared the House.
Center Texas March 4 six persons were burned to death or killed outright in a late night store fire. Firemen were aided by residents during a rescue attempt when the walls began to collapse trapping several people. Many others were injured, some fatally, as they helped remove goods from the burning building.
Knox county farm sale entries total a million dollars this week, the largest weekly total on record in the county as farmers plan migrations to Canada or distant parts of the United States. Whiteside Realty Active reports Sterling area real estate transfers, loans and mortgage extensions from Jan 1 to March 2 totaling 2,500,000, one third above last year.
January domestic exports show wheat shipments surpass corn by volume for the first time in the period. Most wheat moved from Portland Oregon and Puget Sound flour exports for seven months run about 26 percent below the five year average.
Washington March 2 The Argus reports Democratic congressmen plan to push a resolution by Adolph Sabath to divorce the Philippines at the earliest moment while guaranteeing independence similar to Cuba until treaties secure neutralization. The move, heated by cost and military strain, reflects a Democratic stance with Republicans largely opposed to immediate independence.

Waterloo franchise owners won a court ruling as Judge Gridley blocked expulsion by the Three-Eye league. The ruling found a quorum requirement not met and restrained action until proper process. Waterloo to remain in the league pending further formal steps and votes.
Senator F A Landes of Malinet proposes a measure allowing a judge to appoint a successor to the late John Rinck in Rock Island County probate clerk’s office when a vacancy exists. The bill would save about 54000 by avoiding a special election, with Governor Deneen not to act until the legislature decides. Attorney General Stead has been asked for an opinion on the bill’s legality.
Sacramento March 4 The assembly adopted a resolution condemning the U S Senate action on Lorimer and rebuking California agitators who voted for Lorimer.
Puerto Cortez reports March 4 Francisco Bertrand agreed as provisional president of Honduras to serve in October elections.
