Morgan controls a majority after purchasing 502 shares last November, shaping the future policy under a trust with Ryan, Cleveland, and others.
Peoria Illinois March 4 A telephone message from state mine inspector Richard Newsam says 61 bodies of miners were taken from the Cherry mine this morning. Newsam says this probably will be all the bodies recovered.
Chairman Knapp and Dr Neill mediators under the Erdman act traveled to Baltimore to seek a settlement between the Baltimore and Ohio railroad and Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen to avert a strike. The board adjourned until no Wednesday.
Washington March 3 The Supreme Court considers what constitutes a single offense under the 28 hour live stock law as the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Railway fights to limit penalties. Government argues penalties accrue per shipment while the railroad says per train. The decision will affect many interstate carriers and could mirror the Standard Oil case in reach and impact.
Commander Robert E Peary urged New York financial interests to back the planned South Pole expedition in a Chamber of Commerce appearance. He noted his own $10,000 personal contribution and argued the polar venture would honor the Stars and Stripes after the North Pole achievement.
In Juneau on March 4, a powder magazine explosion at the Mexican mine on Douglas Island killed twenty three miners and seriously injured eight, with fears four more deaths. The blast occurred at the 1100 level as workers had just finished shots and were assembling at the landing before boarding a ship. The magazine held 275 pounds of powder, located 30 feet from the workers.
New York March 4. An interlocutory decree of divorce of Mrs Ava Willing Astor from her husband Colonel John J Astor, entered last fall, was made final today. Report says Mrs Astor will receive fifty thousand dollars a year alimony.
Ashlang Wis March 4 Gustave Kirsten a prosperous farmer near Butterrut shot and killed John Bryan during a quarrel with Frank Sturgeon who Bryan was trying to protect Sturgeon disappeared and Kirsten surrendered.
Dallas March 4 Judge Lea instructed the grand jury to investigate the lynching of Allen Brooks with a view to indicting mob leaders. It is believed no indictments will be returned as the city remains quiet and the mob did not seize other targets.
Chicago March 4 The wage dispute between the Switchmen's Union of North America and eight railroads was taken up by the arbitration board under the Erdman act. The panel includes S S Gregory of Chicago Carl R Gray of St Louis and S E B Heterling vice president of the union. Both sides outlined their testimony plans.
Indianapolis March 4 A report by Dr Gulick of New York to the American School Hygiene Association finds normal schools better at developing and conserving students physical soundness than high schools. The conclusion follows responses from about 2,400 high schools and 99 normal schools, totaling 400000 students.
The Russian steamer Korea was buffeted by heavy seas in the North Atlantic and abandoned on March 1. Its 48 crew members were rescued by the steamer Caledonia and are en route to New York.
Representative Dodds of Michigan has introduced a bill to allow benevolent, fraternal, educational or trades union publications to enter the mails as second class matter and enjoy same rates as other publications. It also permits carrying general advertising to circumvent postmaster general rulings restricting such papers from second class status when printing general ads.
Philadelphia on March 4 reports no chance of amicable settlement as labor leaders plan a general strike beginning midnight. The Amalgamated Association sought court arbitration under 1893 law with Philadelphia Rapid Transit to resolve differences. Kruger indicated the company would submit, while city councils did not act and a 100,000-strong sympathy strike looms.
