Washington March 2 Practically an agreement to talk the ship subsidy bill to death was reached by Democratic senators and House leaders Williams and Sherley amid opposition from the House Republicans. The ship subsidy bill faced a tight Senate battle with filibuster tactics and final passage by a narrow margin.
Bell County grand jury refused to indict a man who swindled the Santa Fe railroad of 75000 by securing a bill of lading for 1400 bales of cotton from Belton and delivering none. The fraud was carried out through Moller a cotton buyer who cashed the bill of lading after the railroad allegedly favored other points. The case was presented after Moller was traced in New York, and the man cannot be prosecuted in another Texas county under state law.
Eureka California March 2 All passengers and hand baggage of the wrecked steamer Corona have been brought ashore. Only one person, Quartermaster Gunn, was drowned. The boat is a total loss.
New Orleans on March 2 reports Southern Mississippi and Louisiana endured a two day winter storm with torrential rains fatal electrical displays and cyclonic winds. At least one death occurred in Mississippi and thousands of dollars in damage resulted nationwide in the storm.

Joseph Leiter operator of the Zeigler colliery was found guilty in Franklin county court at Benton of violating the state mining law and will be fined 200 to 500 dollars. He employed a mine examiner without a state mining board certificate at the time of the April 1905 disaster in which 60 men died. Prosecution argued the examiner's ignorance contributed to the disaster. verdict seen as a compromise.
