The Great Textile Strike in Lowell Mills ends after a two month stoppage. The textile council reports unanimous return to work with 17,000 operatives resuming duties. Strike cost about 1.9 million dollars and cotton prices hindered wage gains sought by workers. Local unions and industry leaders weigh future labor actions.
Dubuque Iowa June 22 street cars resumed operations with four militia companies guarding property. Governor Cummins ordered three more militia units mobilized after a looming crisis in the street railway strike. He stated troops are to preserve peace only, not aid strikers. Indianapolis June 22 the thirteenth Modern Woodmen head camp closed the event installing new officers. Local clerks will receive five cents per member per month. retiring Head Counsel Northcott made a life member. The Foresters also broke camp.
Major James B Pond, famed manager of lecturers and singers, dies in Jersey City after a June 17 operation for a leg amputation. Born 1838 in Cuba New York, Pond had been ill for a month and underwent surgery to remove his leg amid hopes of recovery. London reports Cardinal Herbert Vaughan archbishop of Westminster dies after three months illness from heart disease and dropsy. Vaughan, born 181% in London, led England’s Catholic church since Manning’s death and was a respected figure in the realm.
In East St Louis on June 22, about 100 Granite City residents led by F. G. and W. H. Niedringhaus of National Stamping cut the dike protecting Merchants' bridge approach to relieve backwater and prevent flood risk. The action allowed water to flow out, stopping railroad traffic and averting an epidemic threat.
Port Huron Michigan January 2 The supreme tent Knights of Maccabees received a verdict for 50 000 plus interest against Port Huron Savings Bank The court found Charles D Thompson former finance keeper of the order admitted embezzling 50 000 of the Maccabees funds to cover a bank shortage when he was assistant cashier in 1900
Spokane June 22 A Great Northern train of 60 coal cars ran out of control and tore through the city at high speed jumping the track at Davidson Street Three persons were killed nine injured and one missing Three buildings were wrecked including a factory and a store. rescue crews including police and firefighters responded to the crash scene.
June 22 Cleveland and Washington dispatches report Senator Hanna insisting he will not seek the vice presidency though open to the notion if pressed, while Colonel Herrick aims for Ohio governor. President Roosevelt reportedly prefers Taft for VP but may accept another eastern candidate if needed, with Beveridge heavily discussed as a候 candidate.
In Omaha Nebraska on a military trial docket a private Lina Linuier of the twenty fifth infantry stands charged with murder of Sergeant Robert Yours from the same company at Port Niobrats. Judge Tage McPherson reprimands an army lieutenant for assisting the prosecution, stressing civil power over military authority. The court warns such conduct is unacceptable and asserts the civil course of the United States will not be compromised.
In Richmond Virginia today a chancery court dissolved the restraining injunction blocking the United States government from taking possession of the cruiser Galveston. The government will retain ownership as creditors pursue a determined reevaluation and the ship's status remains under government claim.
The grand jury returned indictments against Sugnat W. Machen Dit Groff Samuel A. Groff George and J Lorenz, Toledo residents, charging conspiracy to defraud the government under revised statutes with penalties up to twenty years' imprisonment or fines.
Rome June 22 The conxistory ceremony was shortened to about 35 minutes. The pope’s features looked more cheerful as bands trembled and his voice carried clearly though weaker. He delivered prayers after a reception and led the nomination of new cardinals amid the crowd.
Fourteen workers were badly burned in Tamaqua Pennsylvania when a safety lamp exploded in a mine. Six of the injured face likely death, with the incident attributed to a defective lamp. Local authorities and rescue teams responded to the scene.
Chauncey Dewey and two cowboys, Clyde Wilken and W J McBride, are held for killing Daniel P Berry Alphens ferry and Thurchard Merry in a June 3 battle. A supreme court bail petition argues mob sentiment blocked bail and claims self defense amid a long running Kansas feud over land and cattle.

In Cambridge Ohio a mining blast at a new Senecaville mine killed six men and injured several more, as a barn nearby was destroyed by a sudden flash during a storm. In Long Island sound the Reliance triumphed in the ninety-foot aloupe race, finishing well ahead as the Constitution and Columbia strained to chase. The Reliance beat the Constitution by 4 minutes 47 seconds and the Columbia by 7 minutes 31 seconds, amid a sharp rivalry that slowed the two rivals early on.
Chicago June 42 The Picket won the American Derby in four Jemeths leading practically every step of the mile and up tall. Jockey Wylenson kept him in front through the first three quarters of a mile. Down the back stretch Siegubby the favorite faded and could not catch him. In the home stretch The Picket led decisively and won easily, Claude second from Hernys, Savable fourth. Time 2:28 3/ or beat track record. Payout about 2700. Thirty thousand people watched.
In a conference with Attorney General Knox an order was signed removing Daniel McMillan from the New Mexico Supreme Court on charges of general immorality. Judge Chevent C Smith of Mastinn in New Mexico appointed to succeed McMillan.
In Omaha Nebraska a death sentence for William Rhea and William Klein hinges on a misprinted comma in the engrossed roll. Klein’s lawyers argue punctuation changes the law and demand governor intervention to stay the July execution.
A violent escape at Canon City state penitentiary ends with a guard dead and several others injured. Convicts seized the warden’s wife and forced her to the yard before guards opened fire, killing one inmate and wounding others. Two convicts fled on horseback as the manhunt began.
George Marvin and George Hunt of Chicago attempted to blow the safe at a Joliet general store using a can of nitro glycerine. An explosion tore clothing and left Marvin gravely burned while Hunt fled, pursued by locals. A posse was sent, one robber evaded capture, and Chicago authorities were alerted to watch for him.
Curtin Jett and Thomas White from Jackson, Kentucky, were jailed in Lexington on June 22. Visitors were barred, and services canceled due to crowds.
