Chicago June 21 delegates assembled at the Coliseum for the first Republican convention in party history. Root was elected temporary chairman as roars greeted Roosevelt and Hanna while Root praised Republican achievements and outlined party fidelity, honesty, and fiscal responsibility amid plans to seat Puerto Rico and Philippines delegates.
The speaker discusses trusts and states that four years ago trust regulation by law stood substantially as it did when the Sherman Antitrust Act was passed in 1890, outlining actions taken under Republican administrations to address corporate combinations.
Four persons drowned when a small sailboat capsized in Teal Lake near Negaunee Michigan during a thunderstorm. Victims include Florence Crane Roy Mitchell Mrs Orr and Gordon Piper. John Orr survived after the boat tipped and Mrs Orr was rescued but died en route to a doctor.

Four men suspected of the Bearmouth Pacific train robbery appeared at a mining camp on Lillarvey creek twelve miles south of Learmonth in Montana. They demanded food, rode mounted, carried canvas bags, and divided the loot while one man restrained miners. After about two hours they rested then rode off south.
Washington reports Victor H. Metcalf of California's Third District will succeed Cortelyou as head of the department of commerce and labor. No department change until the close of the current fiscal year on the 30th. Cortelyou will finish the year with several key initiatives pending.

Chicago June 21 The Democratic congressional nominations were made today in the districts with list of nominees including John Oehman in the first district George P Foster in the fourth Charles J Vopicka in the fifth George Gubbins in the sixth W P Harrison in the eighth and James Turnock in the tenth district.
Omaha city report says 18 year old John Hrock shot and fatally wounded his father John M Hrock after claiming the father was striking him. The incident occurred last night in Omaha Nebraska with authorities investigating the alleged danger to the son prior to the shooting.
A 21 an engine pulling a Delaware railroad passenger train went through the draw at Laurel river, killing Engineer County of Wilmington. The baggage master crawled under the wav ing train and uncoupled the cars, saving the passengers.
The will of Levi Z. Leiter, Chicago millionaire who died at Bar Harbor, filed in Washington. It provides one third of the estate to widow Mary T. Leiter, with rest divided among children Nancy, Marguerite, and Joseph. Joseph receives 600 acres coal lands in Illinois vested in fee simple and guaranteed annual incomes of 10 000 and 4 000 as details unfold. Chauncey Keep named to first vacancy among trustees with 5000 yearly.
The will sets aside $1,000,000 as a separate trust for Lady Curzon, atop a $700,000 prior marriage settlement, totaling $1,700,000 as an advancement against the estate. Trustees include Joseph I Robert T Lincoln and F Nathaniel Curzon. Remaining estate mostly to widow Mary Leiter and heirs, with coal lands in Illinois managed under trust, and Joseph Leiter to later gain full conveyance after settling debts plus interest.
Crawfordsville Indiana June 21 Charles Kaiser a Naperville Illinois electrical engineer employed at a Northwestern Traction camp near Crawfordsville committed death by own action using a scientific method He removed his clothing stretched on a large taper saw wired his wrist with a feed wire and completed the circuit with steel nippers His body was found when the camp awoke Kaiser a Purdue graduate last week was noted as a leading Tau Beta Pi member.
Lansing June 21 Ir Ralph Apted of the medical unit of the Michigan National Guard directs recruitment of a regimental hospital corps to accompany summer camp. Selection will favormi esciess students and drug clerks. Volunteers enlist in the hospital corps rather than regular ranks.
Paris UL June 21 Daniel G Burt aged sixty one survivor of Company A Fourth regiment recruited at Paris held a reunion alone at the fair grounds in Paris He called the roll from a list he had kept as orderly sergeant and spent the day in meditation eating a picnic dinner alone A friend later drove him back to town He was born near Paris.

In Stevens Point Anna Gustimski was shot by a disappointed lover and seriously wounded. John Fields injured. Evansville notes Lt. James Gray, former senator and wealthy business figure, is dead. Lexington records the death of Judge J Soule Smith, a Mason and author. Richmond reports Rev Alve Long 80 and Mrs Sarah Metzker 74 marry in north of town, a romance spanning years.
From Sinmintun June 14 indications point to a Russian rout with fleeing troops toward Mukden. Emerson the war correspondent is said to have been shot as Russians believed him a spy. Vladivostok squadron returns. Bezobrazoff report includes no Japanese coast bombardment. Baltic fleet approved to sail Sept 15 via Cape Horn to the Far East. A wounded Russian officer claims 7000+ casualties and extols Japanese prowess and artillery.
In Sioux City on June 21 a running fight ended with two burglars trying to flee from Sheriff Morris Night Watchman Vandersinis and Marshal Walraven. All fired about a dozen shots. One burglar was captured while the other was wounded. The captured man said his name was Fraok Wilson of Independence Louisiana.
The Supreme court orders stricken reply in the disbarment case against Coleman. The court says whether Coleman is guilty has no bearing on the controversy with Warren Springer and his attorney Mimi.
