Captain James May and Captain Powers in Davenport History
Captain James May of what is now Davenport sought an auctioneer to sell town lots. Captain Powers took the job, faced overgrown grass at the ground, but two days in, gained reputation as a leading local auctioneer. Powers later left Rock Island in 1842, bought the steamboat Pike, transported lead from Galena to St Louis, endured a ruined policy, and survived a wreck with his crew. In St Louis he learned his daughter Julia died of typhoid. He returned to Rock Island and opened the American House hotel in 1845, the day Colonel Davenport was murdered.
