Coal production figures show a year of sizable growth with 925,749 tons noted in a context of broader energy shifts. Only California and Oregon posted declines as oil use rose for rail and factory needs, while total output neared half a billion tons had industry not suffered from a late year financial slump.
Cincinnati June 20 At a conference this afternoon Frank Hitchcock declined to be considered for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee giving his health as the reason. Adjournment was taken until July 1 when the committee will reconvene in Washington to again take up the matter of the chairmanship.
President Roosevelt and the Roosevelt party departed Union Station at 9:15 a.m. by private and parlor cars, expected to reach Oyster Bay at 4:35 p.m. The First Family, including Mrs. Roosevelt and daughters, traveled with key staff and officials. The White House will be refurnished and overhauled during the presidential absence. The train reached Jersey City at 2:27 p.m. and proceeded by tug Lancaster to Long Island City for Oyster Bay.
From San Francisco a June 20 report notes President Roosevelt prints a June 8 White House letter by Rudolph Spreckels urging prosecutors to keep up the fight against local graft. He calls for firm action and to disregard all slander and falsehoods aimed at officials.
Pittsfield Mass June 20 The balloon Boston which soared here yesterday landed safely after seven last evening on a Vermont mountain near Putney. Owner Charles Glidden and aeronaut Leo Stevens endured a tense flight being fired upon with rifles and later charged by a young bull but escaped harm by rapid running and fencing.
Louisville June 2 An important feature of the 12th international Sunday school convention was the adoption today of the report of the international lesson committee which prepares lessons for all Sunday schools with about 16,000,000 members. M C Hazard of Boston president of the Sunday School Editorial Association delivered an address.
Flood crest reached 48 feet at East St. Louis as mayor and officials surge to save the city. Five hundred workers pile sandbags along embankments on the Baltimore and Ohio and Illinois Central rail lines to guard against a breach that could inundate the island area and residence districts. Granite City reports seven feet of water inside homes and tents on high ground for refuge. Separately, storms in western Pennsylvania to West Virginia cause over 200000 dollars in damage as communications fail in places.
New York June 20. The battleship New Hampshire left Brooklyn navy yard this afternoon carrying 400 marines bound for Panama. They are prepared to maintain order during the upcoming presidential election if needed.
Paris June 2 The banns of Mme Anna Gould and Prince Helie De Sagan were published this morning. The document gives ages 33 and 41. Although the marriage will not occur in France, banns are required by law in the domicile. Place and date secret the exact place and date are not yet disclosed but the ceremony is planned in about two weeks with relatives including George J. Gould. The ceremony will be according to Protestant rites as Helie de Sagan has not renounced Catholicism. Boni de Castellane has not moved legally. Goulds lawyers say efforts to secure possession of their children will fail.
La Porte Indiana June 20 S W Worden attorney for Ray Lamphere in dicted for the murder of Mrs Gunness her three children and Andrew Helgelein today issued a statement scolding county authorities and appealing for subscriptions to fund a reward for Mrs Gunness. Worden received information from a Missourian who would name name and address but refused to disclose it promising that a reward would bring Mrs Gunness to a given location 70 miles from Worden's residence. Dr Walter Haynes of Rush Medical College Chicago told the coroner Mack he found traces of arsenic and strychnine in the stomach of Andrew Helgelein.
Chicago June 20 A meeting of the state democratic central committee will decide the date for the state convention under the new primary law. Chairman Boeschenstein doubts a quorum but says the panel will name trustees for the State university and possibly the presidential electors and adopt a platform. Compton of Macomb enters Democratic race for Fourteenth district Congress.
Washington reports Illinois remains the United States' second coal producer after Pennsylvania. 1907 output reached 51,317,146 tons, up 9,837,042 from 1906, with West Virginia at 46,091,583 tons. Total coal production for 1907 was 480,450,042 short tons valued at 614,831,549, with Pennsylvania supplying over half.
Utica New York marks James S Sherman nomination with bells, cannon, and flags. marching clubs held meetings to plan a welcome parade on his return from the convention. telegrams of congratulations flowed to the Sherman family all day.
Mexico City reports the Yaqui war has begun with American and Mexican troops advancing against the Indians. In a Buena Vista Chihuahua battle four Indians were killed and several wounded as peace arrangements face renewed resistance.
Perry Belmont, head of the American National Publicity Law, mails to the Associated Press urging the Republican and Democratic national conventions to adopt a campaign disclosure plank. He cites Secretary Taft’s support for a publicity bill and stresses continued press reliance to publish campaign contributions and expenditures by both parties.
An explosion at Ellsworth coal mines near Monongahela Pa leaves one American and three foreigners dead and six others injured after a foreign worker entered a mine with a lighted torch. The incident underscores mine safety issues. In New York a separate note, Justice Bisehof barred police interference with betting on the Sheepshead track.
A massive blast at the Dupont powder mills near Louviere, twenty miles from Denver, June 20, may have destroyed the entire plant with potential loss of life. Doctors are being rushed to the scene as wire communication is cut off. the plant employs 125 men.
Peoria June 20 The Modern Woodmen head camp adjourned at 2:35 after a nonstop session. Head officers salaries were raised with the head consul to 10 000 per year and others to 7500 5000 and 6000. The body adopted bylaws and resolutions praising the gathering and endorsing reforms while voting down a surplus reserve plan.
Philadelphia June 26 One man is dead another missing and nearly a score injured after an explosion in the hold of the steamer Arcadia, arriving from Hamburg. Most injured are negro stevedores. Cause unknown but suspected gas with holds closed. Ship badly burned. Lightning strikes Vic tor Rubber plant at Snider ville Ohio June 20 destroying plant with losses around 125000.
