New York June 17 divers recovered up to 532 pounds of material from the General Slocum disaster with a mass of bodies wedged in a paddle box. The death toll remains uncertain as investigators assess remains and missing persons figures continue to shift.
Numerous passengers were injured in the Slocum panic after the disaster, with at least 200 taken to hospitals. No deaths reported yet, and many have been discharged. A striking case involved Miss Clara Hartusin found near death, towed behind a boat, wrapped in tarpaulin, then revived at Alexander Avenue police station.
A 25 year old Alexander McMillan of Duluth sustained a thigh wound from an accidental gunshot while returning from Skibo cabin. He crawled for two days through dense woods, surviving on blood loss, hunger, and thirst before being found by his mother and sister with help from a searching party.
The Home Bank in Goodland closes after president Gilman and cashier vanish to seek funds in Indianapolis. Helsingfors June 17 Gen Bobrikoff Finland governor general who was shot yesterday died this morning The official statement says the convocation of the diet will probably be prevented by order of the emperor as a result of the assassination The malcontents in Finland are few mostly Swedes and most Finns back unification under empire while some Finnish papers hostile to Russian rule note repressive measures were needed. The incident follows prior violence and reflects tensions amid Finnish politics and Russo Finnish policy.
Two masked men halted a Northern Pacific passenger train near Bearmouth Montana, dynamited the express car and safe, then vanished. Authorities say little of value was taken and no injuries were reported.
A historic storm drenched Santiago de Cuba with fourteen inches of rain in five hours, destroying El Cobre village, with forty five dead and many missing. Bodies drift the Cobre River as trains and bridges fail, wrecking a relief train and killing staff. Hitaeu Michigan reports a break in at Roller Mills offices with a safe blown open by a large explosion. Robbers stole about $100 in currency and valuable papers. alerting authorities as workers and residents hear the blast. A Newark youth, Clinton Millikiy, is linked to the incident after returning from a circus show.
The Iowa Board of Regents refused to remove President Georg E. Maclean after extended review finding hostility from alumni and faculty did not prove grounds for change. Sioux City June 17 At the annual meeting of the Iowa and Nebraska Coal Dealers association President China of Connell Bini announced a victory in the campaign against railroads over short weight. Coal dealers pressed for coal to be weighed on delivery for a $2 fee after western lines agreed to comply following talks with eastern lines and a 20 percent shortage concern.

The chaotic dispatches describe convicts, injunctions, and political maneuvering surrounding a draft convict labor bill. The array of rumors and ship movements from Vladivostok to Port Arthur fill the day’s uncertain battlefield chatter.
Reports from Vladivostok describe a Russian squadron damaging Japanese vessels off Tet island. Two transports Matichi and Sada carrying 1,400 soldiers and stores were attacked. Captain Campbell aboard Hino observed a Russian warship with four tunnels target Matichi. Survivors confirm three Russian warships near Tet isl and a naval engagement continuing at 10 o clock Wednesday morning.
St Louis June 17 Iowa dedicates its day at the world’s fair. A military parade formed at the Iowa state pavilion and marched to the Iowa monument. Governors Cummins and Larrabee spoke along with exposition leaders and officials. Isaac S Taylor presented the monument to Leroy A Paine.
Chattanooga Tenn June 17 The AOTW adopted resolutions to change rules prohibiting designating a divorced wife as beneficiary after divorce. The supreme title elected WN Narvis of Misetina Tawa as supreme Thakter workman The Superior Lente Degree of Honor elected Mrs Rene M Raikes of Buffalo as superior chief of honor and Mrs Elizabeth At Burt of Sioux City Iowa as recorder.
