Crowds cheered as Chicago railways resumed service after a short strike. Arbitration and a three-member board were announced to select an arbiter, with Mayor Thompson and International Typographical Union leaders present. Sessions were to begin early next week as talks aimed at a fair settlement continued.
After delicate talks in a yacht conference, a formal peace agreement was signed this afternoon. The accord sets two year terms and bans hiring men for single trips during week hours, with all remaining issues to be arbitrated. Judge Kickham Stanton of Cook County was expected to join the board.
Butte Montana June 1 The Butte Miners Union, parent of the Western Federation of Miners, formally withdrew from the federation alleging it contributed $1 696 000 over years without benefit. The move follows friction that peaked with the dynamiting of federation headquarters a year ago.
The French torpedo boat numbered 331 sank today after a collision with the British steamer Arieys. Six crew members were lost while the others were rescued by torpedo boat 337.
