Reciprocity amendment added to print paper and wood pulp bill
Washington June 8 after an hour's session the senate committee of finance agreed to report the reciprocity bill with the Root amendment added. The root amendment to the print paper and wood pulp provision was adopted by the committee 8 to 6. An attempt to report unfavorably resulted in a tie. A separate effort to report without recommendation also tied. A move to reduce duties on livestock and farm products was defeated, as was an attempt to include flour and meats in the free list. On the root amendment admitting American wood pulp and paper into Canada free of duty, supporters included Lodge Smoot Gallinger Clark of Wyoming Heyburn LaFoliette Bailey Simmons. Opponents included Petrose Culler McCumber Stone Kern Williams. The bill will be reported to the senate next Tuesday. Letters commend measure Washington June 8 telegrams and letters continue to arrive favoring reciprocity with Canada. A telegram from the president of the Saginaw board of trade reported a poll of 894 in favor and 57 against.
