The Edgar County National Bank in Paris Illinois was wrecked by dynamite at 4 am. The blast also demolished Bradshaw's jewelry store and Wetzel's shoe store next to the bank. The vault was damaged but the bank funds safe. Bookkeeper Walter Juntenen suffers a broken arm from a brick shot into his window.
Joseph D. Hart charged with murdering James Poppis by a blow with a pick handle asked for a continuance and the court granted it due to the absence of a material witness. H A Weld represents the defendant.
Register of Deeds Otto J. Seidel Jr and ex Supervisor Edward F. Strauss confess to graft in Milwaukee County Board. Twenty or more supervisors and several contractors are implicated. The confessions will be submitted to the grand jury with many indictments anticipated.
Paris court rules the shah of Persia cannot be compelled to repay debts incurred in France because as sovereign he is not subject to French law. The June decision sides with Persia’s ruler, limiting French jurisdiction over royal finances.
W W Karr, disbursing officer at the Smithsonian national museum, was arrested on embezzlement charges after confessing to about $46,000 stolen over fifteen years. He claims no confederates and says the money’s fate remains unknown. He is 52 with a wife and four children.
