Northland Steamer Grounded After Reefing in Fog

The steamer Northland with 75 passengers from New York to Portland Maine ran ashore on Bartletts reef near New London in dense fog. Passengers reached New London by wrecking tug Tasco at 5 am and report fear after the Empress of Ireland disaster but no major panic. The captain and crew stay aboard as salvage work continues and a lightering plan is made. The ship, steel 304 feet long, was damaged at bows and forehold. Army aviators die in midair explosion crash

Two army flyers were killed near here when their aircraft bursts into flames at an altitude of half a mile above a forest. Peasants heard the explosion and saw flames, then fragments of the aeroplane fell among the trees. The pilots were strapped to the plane and their bodies were severely burned and mutilated.
