Chicago July 28 Judge Dunne today notified State's Attorney that he would release Charles Spaulding former treasurer of the University of Chicago on a writ of corpus tomorrow unless the attorney can show conclusively the embezzlement law used was not special legislation.
Portland Oregon July 28 Frank Carlson and George Baldwin both 19 quarreled over two girls. They fought bare knuckles in an isolated city area. Both checked for weapons. After about twenty minutes Carlson was struck in the stomach, collapsed, and died.
New York July 28 Bernard Maylann was arrested on a complaint by SS Conover of Irving National Bank accusing him of depositing four $100 bills lacking the cashier signature. The bills from First National Bank Shelbyville Illinois bore the presidents signature but lacked the cashier. Maylann claimed to have found them but gave no location. Pottsville Pa July 28 Foreman Daniel Landerman of Kohinoor colliery Shenandoah was seriously shot near his home by striking workers.
New York July 28 Governor William H Hunt and Attorney General James S Harlan discuss Porto Rico on the steamer Coamo. Exports last year reached 12 539 925 with a 54 71 percent rise to foreign markets and 46 6 percent to the United States, helped by sugar cigars cigarettes and coffee. Education expands with two industrial schools planned and nearly 50 000 children taught. Baltimore July 23 The Baltimore Base Ball and Athletic Company filed a bill in circuit court asking for a receiver to oversee the American League grounds and demanding President Johnson account for all money received since McGraw and his associates left Baltimore and joined the New York National League team.
American Dr Russell Wilson of Ohio captured with Nicaragua revolutionists had death sentence commuted after cable from Consul Donaldson in Managua. Minister Corea pressed mercy and U S State Department received the report confirming the commutation.
Four men three whites and one black are reported shot and killed on a Missouri Pacific to Texas excursion train in Indiana territory. Deputies say two whites and two negroes were killed by others on board and the deputy sheriff accompanying the party was himself shot and killed. No names or further details available.

Dr Charles Kendall Adams aged 67 former University of Wisconsin president died in Redlands California after a long illness Brights disease Mrs Adams exhausted by caring for him. Adams born in Derby Vermont educated at Michigan Cornell Wisconsin where he served as president prior to resigning last year. Also notice Rev Stephen L Baldwin recording secretary of the missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal church died aged 67 of typhoid fever.

Anderson Indiana July 28 The pumping of natural gas from the Indiana field to Chicago and other large cities outside the gas belt is likely to be stopped if a decision by Judge Ryan of the Madison superior court is sustained by the supreme court. The judge issues a perpetual injunction restraining the Richmond Natural Gas company from operating its pumping station near Newcastle. He states five questions are involved with the key one whether pumps or compressors take gas away from the district for outside cities while local residents cannot obtain it. The court finds they do and orders preservation of the supply for home use.
Godfrey Moore and Henry Moore of New York were fatally hurt in a head on collision on the Brooklyn Elevated on Adams street. Thirteen others were seriously injured as six cars derailed and two wrecked due to a misplaced switch.
Brooklyn reports Mrs. Mary Meade who killed her children Alice and Mary last Saturday died in the hospital today.
Pembroke Georgia July 28 John Wise a black man who last Wednesday assaulted Mrs John Smith a young white woman living near here was lynched last night by a mob authorities reported the event noting the crowd reacted immediately after the attack and the suspect was seized and killed without trial.
