Frank H. Hitchcock, chairman, announced the executive committee will be drawn from the Republican National Committee. Members named include Charles F. Brooker Connecticut, T. Coleman Dupont Delaware, William E. Borah Idaho, Frank T. Lowden Illinois, Charles Nagel Missouri, Victor Rosewater Nebraska, William L. Ward New York, Edward Duncan North Carolina, and Boise Penrose Pennsylvania. Hitchcock said he consulted party leaders nationwide before selecting the group. Later details on eastern western distribution will be released. Also, Frederick W. Upham of Chicago was appointed assistant treasurer with the approval of George R. Sheldon.
Adlai E. Stevenson, former vice president, announced his candidacy for Illinois governor at Bloomington on July 27. In a public letter after meeting party leaders he pledged to canvass the state if nominated on August 8 and endorsed the Denver platform. He praised Bryan and urged a nonpartisan administration, including a cabinet post for labor if elected.
Washington July 27 The Interstate Commerce Commission announced that freight rates are justified and shippers may combine small lots of freight from different owners or via forwarding agencies to ship as a larger combined lot at lower rates. The commission will open an investigation on its own motion without waiting for formal complaints.

Temstad, Island of Caracao July 27. The Dutch cruiser Gelderland arrived off Willemstad with J. D. Dereus the Netherlands minister resident in Caracas who was expelled by President Castro. The Gelderland is ordered to proceed immediately to Venezuela to safeguard Dutch interests there.
Des Moines reports the 2d cavalry from Fort Des Moines departs via the Great Western for St Joseph to begin a country march on foot to Fort Riley Kansas. The journey follows heavy marching by luggage and knapsacks as the unit departs for the long trek.
