A chaotic scene followed the Standard Oil Co. through streets as crowds cheered and shrill whistles pierced the air. The company was arrested and fined $10 after a miscarriage of justice related incident, with onlookers shouting in excitement.
In Quebec July 24 the Prince of Wales led a grand pageant marking Quebec’s 300th anniversary. Vice President Fairbanks and the prince exchanged addresses affirming strong U.S. Britain ties and goodwill. Fireworks lit the city as ships and citadel displays framed the celebration.
Newport July 24 Members of the naval conference resumed talks on battleship plans. President Roosevelt urged not to overvalue outsider criticism, stressing the navy’s methods, construction, gunnery, and personnel must stay in the front rank and that the commissioned force is key to the Jesuits. The executive session answered questions and debated abolishing the general board as officials weigh feasibility.
At the London Olympics Dorando of Italy collapsed near the marathon finish and was carried across the line. Hayes of the United States finished second amid protests over Dorando’s finish and officials aided the Italian runner. The British team won the 200 meter relay final with Hungary second and the United States third.
A lively Democratic race in Illinois centers on Adlai E. Stevenson joining the gubernatorial contest. Rumors say Judge E. R. E. Kimbrough may withdraw to back Stevenson, while reports link William Jennings Bryan to Stevenson. Bryan’s allies and rivals trade positions as Illinois leaders weigh the candidates Pattison, McGoorty, and Colonel James Hamilton Lewis.
Lincoln Nebraska July 24 William J Bryan prepared for Chicago by clearing correspondence. He received letters from Oregon Governor Chamberlin New York Lieutenant Governor Chanler and Representative Rourke Cochran praising his nomination and pledging support for the Democratic ticket. He refused to name the national committee officers. Manic Commits death by own action in Galesburg Illinois. Nicholas Morbier hanged himself in the county jail to a feed post with a necktie.
In Boston on July 24 a second desperado eluded police after a night siege, wounded and barefoot, while an earlier companion lay dead. A rapid chase through Forest Hill cemetery ended with the killer's body riddled by bullets. a captive was seized at the gate as investigators pursued the surviving suspect and bystanders. Two men, Giuseppe Viejo and Edward McDougall, were jailed for further hearing.
Chicago July 24 United States grand jury indicted Illinois Central and Rock Island Pacific for interstate pass violations favoring the Fruit Dispatch unit of United Fruit. Illinois Central cited 100 violations and Rock Island eight counts. Indictments allege discrimination against smaller shippers, with passes issued to Fruit Dispatch employees and agents across systems. Names of implicated agents and Colorado-based patrons appear alongside corporate connections.
Natalbany La July 24 Following the dynamiting of an Italian home and other disorders Sheriff Saal sent a message to Governor Sanders requesting troops. Italians by the hundreds are leaving this section. Bombs and robberies reported in Bardolph Al. A post office safe was opened and money and stamps stolen. Two explosions alarmed residents. A posse trailed robbers to Bushnell but the pursuit was lost. In Cleveland Ohio a fire killed two children and seriously injured a parent.
The President directs the Attorney General to seek a retrial of the Standard Oil case. The reversal of the lower court affects only the fine size, not guilt, and would be a miscarriage of justice if punishment is escaped. Kellogg is to be consulted to bring offenders to justice. Roosevelt invokes executive concern while deeming the appellate court independent.
President Roosevelt announced the administration would press the Standard Oil case in court, aiming to avoid technicalities and proceed with the actual issues. Secretary Loeb and Judge Grosscup commented on the move, while the Justice Department noted that while an appeal to the Supreme Court lies as a right in criminal final judgments, the government may seek a writ of certiorari.
