San Diego on July 22 reports a growing casualty list from the Bennington explosion. Official tallies show dozens dead, many missing, and about fifty injured as crews battle flooding, search for survivors, and prepare military burials at Point Loma.
The gunboat Bennington exploded after a weak boiler, a condition known for months despite a favorable last year inspection. The vessel lay midstream off the commercial wharf at H street as Commander Lucien Young prepared orders to sail to Port Harford. Steam was up and many men were on deck when the disaster struck.
The New York Times reports Town Topics and the district attorney released the list of subscribers to Facts and Fancies. Notable donors include Mrs Collis P. Vanderbelt and J J Astor among others. Roosevelt accepted a free copy while Grover Cleveland declined. Heavy contributors exceed 1500 dollars.
Edward W Nash president of the American Smelting and Refining company died at his Omaha home from effects of a stroke of paralysis suffered May 22. He passed away July 22. Nash led ASARCO during a pivotal era and was a prominent figure in the metal industry.

Topeka Kans July 22 State Treasurer T T Kelly refused formally the demand of Gov Hoch to give a new bond for 750 000 to cover that impaired by the failure of C J Devlin who was one of Kellys principal bonds men Gov Hoch who had given Mr Kelly until yesterday to act promptly removed the treasurer The state executive council met to consider the situation and Treasurer Kelly appeared before the members and explained his situation at length taking the position that the governors demand was excessive Kelly in his statement indicated that he was unable to get the necessary bondsmen Gov Hoch offered the position of state treasurer to R M Allen but the latter declined He then offered the position to Charles W Hull of Kirwin who is considering it.
The National Live Stock Exchange condemned the 28 hours stock transit law and will lobby in Washington to repeal it. New officers include President A L Koechler St Louis secretary C W Baker Chicago and treasurer P S Graves Indianapolis. Vice President W M Ward Sioux City Iowa was also chosen.
Lemons wholesale at seven dollars a box with Chicago wholesalers predicting nine dollars next week. Local dealers paid three fifty a box last week, a doubling in price. Weather kept demand low causing spoilage as repacking lagged and decay appeared, triggering a sharp price surge.

About 400 charges totaling 45 tons were exploded simultaneously to widen the waterway to Seavers Island dry dock. The $749,000 contract marks the largest charge ever set off in the United States. The day also included the closing of the International Association of Press Clubs convention in Detroit with a business session and dinner.
William J McDonald a Long Island Railroad worker dies saving a woman and baby at a Long Island City crossing. He pulled the woman to safety as an oncoming train struck him. His widow and four children are left destitute. The incident occurred last night and is mourned locally. The report also notes a planned congressional session and other city notices.
