Bulletin updates from Rome describe Pope Leo XIII's condition as critical with fluctuating breathing, winding down to restful sleep and deep fatigue. Doctors note pleural effusion aggravating respiration, while observers report a sunken, aged appearance and loss of his characteristic smile.
Reports from central Nebraska describe one of summer's worst storms with six to eight mile rain bands. Buildings barns windmills damaged many horses killed in a single barn. Tornadoes hit Curtis and Red Willow counties destroying windmills barns and outhouses. Nebraska towns report hail wind and rain wrecking property and crops with no lives lost.
Four lives were lost when a sanitarium in Bonner Springs Kansas burned early today. The dead include Apt. J. Al McClure of Junction City Miss Janie Campbell of Lola Mrs. A A Cook of Lawrence and Dr A E Rogers the sanitarium steward.
Milwaukee July 16 The opening tournament of the Western Golf Association began at the links of the Milwaukee Country Club today. Sixty eight players 50 professionals and 29 amateurs were on the card to start.

Judge Holdom condemned unions for pressuring Kellogg to sign a contract barring non-union workers as unlawful discrimination. Riotous picketing and police firing shots marked a tense day as teamsters hindered shipments to freight houses. Iowa coal operators then charged local United Mine Workers unions with grievances, threatening contract termination if unresolved.
Mrs James Blaine aged 76 passed away in Augusta after a long illness. Harriet Stanwood, she was born in Maine and later married James G Blaine. The couple moved to State street and she will be buried tomorrow in Washington.
In Indianapolis on July 16, reports say the American Federation of Labor is trying to organize the D. M. Parry plant. Parry warned that if the plant becomes union run, Indianapolis will lose it. He also told the Commercial Club a union headquarters in Indianapolis would be expedient to discourage.
In Bloomington New York Jan 16 detective Butler remains confident Maude Jardine murdered her baby sister last Thursday. Public sentiment favors Jardine though police and sheriff report no new results and remain in the dark. Rewards are raised by private citizens alongside city and county offers. The only new lead is a comb found with the child.
At the Republican state convention in Louisville a test of strength on gubernatorial delegates surfaced. Major C Owens was elected temporary chairman by a large margin, with Belknap and Morris B Belknap seen as leading contenders on the first ballot. Committees announced but credentials not ready, session adjourned for the day.
July 16. The Society of Santiago de Cuba and the 50th army opened their reunion with a grand military parole. Maj. Gen. Chaffee served as chief marshal. Maj. Gen. Bates from the Department of the Lakes commanded the militia division while Maj. Gen. Shafter, president of the society, reviewed the parade.
Alfred Knapp was today convicted of murder in the first degree for the killing of his wife Anna Goddard Knapp. The case emerges among a set of tragic Fourth of July injuries and a police action against bookmakers in Chicago as Justice PrinDiville signs warrants and search orders.
Washington July 16 The Manchurian question is settled satisfactorily for the government. Assurances from the Chinese government promise future treaty ports and open trade. The Russian government conveyed to the United States it will not oppose such openings. Port Arthur conference ends with relief over Russia's growing Manchurian power, Russia objecting to foreign consuls in towns under its control but not to foreign trade itself.
Denver July 1 Leaders of the Reform Party unite Populists and socialists into a single organization. A Denver conference is planned for July 27 with George Fred Williams wiring support. Attorney Darrow of Chicago and Edward Atkinson will send addresses, while Poynter and Andrews plan to attend. Bryan has not yet replied.
A young woman found on the Gulf of Finland beach behind Sergievo Monastery twelve miles from St. Petersburg bears terrible burns to feet and legs. Wearing a monk's cassock she said self-incineration was the only salvation and prepared a funeral pile after attending services. She drifted homeward but collapsed, remaining forty eight hours where found. doctors hope to save her life.
A Vancouver Telegram report states twelve Chinese miners died in a Como mine explosion caused by fire damp. Very little property damage occurred. The incident occurred in July.
