Topeka July 14 Labor Commissioner Johnson launches a drive against state officers and clerks working over eight hours a day warning prosecutions may follow. Governor Bailey dismisses the warning saying his duties require nights and Sundays and no court would punish him for doing his duty.
Milwaukee July 14 Associate Justice David G Brewer of the United States Supreme Court says every man who participates in a lynching or burning a negro is a murderer pure and simple He notes extenuating circumstances may alter degree but principal participants can be held for murder in the land’s courts He predicts a reaction against the atrocious crimes and a shift in public discussion.

He questions Methodist publishing restrictions on youth literature.
Pontiac Michigan July 14 a fatal accident involving Comona Spatafore prompted a discussion on backing street cars down Saginaw street. Proposed safety measures include adding a fender and placing a barrier on Jackson Street. The city ordinance on eight mile per hour speed within limits to be enforced. Spatafore’s funeral held at St. Vincent de Paul and burial at Mount Hope cemetery. Tornado in Carbondale Pennsylvania caused extensive damage
Denver July report of a wind gust that toppled a large tent at the Christian Endeavor convention drawing over 8 000 attendees. Nearly score injured but none fatally, with quick actions by A M Ramsey and Mrs Wilfred Sleep praised as the tent roof ballooned and fires were prevented by shutting off power. An impromptu open air prayer service followed as people were extricated.
Twelve Salvation Army members led by Adjutant Rosenta Pauli and Captain August Turney were arrested at State and Quincey streets for obstructing the sidewalk. Held at Harrison Street station, they prayed in their cells. Alderman Kenna posted bonds for their appearance before Justice Prindiville after turning to the alderman for help. The alderman called the arrests a shame and pledged support for the Army.
Panic swept eight thousand in a tent when poles fell from the canvas. Ramsey urged men to hold up the framework, saving many. Over a thousand fled from the walls, and rescuers carried the injured to a hospital tent. Victims included Mrs Thornburgh of Denver and several others from Colorado and Illinois.
Catskill New York July 14 a black bear emerged from the woods near Glen Mary half a mile away. Several visiting New Yorkers gave chase and shots were fired at the Howland summer place but failed. On the Hopkins property two dogs cornered the bear and a shot by James Tallenbeck killed it. The 170 pound bear died nine miles from the mountains.
Des Moines Iowa July 14 Governor Cummins denies reports of an autograph letter indicating willingness to accept a vice presidential nomination. He says newspaper men never saw such a letter and suspects the claim was meant to trap him. He would accept if offered though doubts he is seriously considered.

Oyster Bay July 14. A conference at Sagamore Hill between the president and representatives of the society of B n ai Prith on the Kishineff outrages suggests the petition to the Russian government may not be forwarded. In Kishineff the murder of the Bey and the massacre were linked to a Jew and a gardener confession.
Terre Haute Indiana July 14 The surgeons who operated on Elmer Fields to sever fourteen intestinal wounds were astounded by his recovery The day after sewing the wounds he was seen walking the ward for bed clothing A subsequent search found another bullet lodged in his side and removed from the opposite lip Fields had earlier attempted suicide and shot through a lung Two weeks ago a man named John shot at Fields from a room window two bullets hit Fields one hit the wife in the hip She has been discharged Fields was discharged Sunday
Paris July 14 French national holiday celebrated in brilliant weather. President Loubet reviewed the garrison. Santos Dumont appeared in an airship over Lengehamp, saluting the president with three whistle blasts before heading to headquarters at Miteaux.
Washington July 14 Gen. Corbin approves Gen Bates recommendation in the case of Lieut William B McCue of the 1st Infantry. The officer is en route to Elizabeths hospital for the insane in this city. McCue married in San Francisco while having a wife in Cincinnati.
In Chicago today, 50 year old Joseph Howarth shot and killed his wife Bertha Howarth at their home before fatally shooting himself. Police report a personal crisis preceded the double tragedy.
Edward Hall alias George Hubbard and Mabel Baldwin Mead captured in Saginaw after escaping jail together. They had hidden with Hall’s sister. Otis Baldwin confessed to buying the jail saw used to remove bars.
