On the day’s ballots Bryan and Stevenson secure a joint ticket as the vice presidential on the first ballot. Silver Republicans also honor Nebraska statesman in a nod to party leadership and electoral strategy.
Kansas City July 6 1900 amid dramatic scenes the Democratic convention adopted a new platform endorsing imperialism as the campaign issue. Delegates and crowds cheered as Bryan’s nomination circulated, with Tillman leading the platform attack. The hall filled to about 25 000 as flags waved and bands played The Stars and Stripes.
A July 5 Shangai dispatch reports Pekin troops butchered about five thousand Roman Catholic converts as insurrection grows. edicts from Prince Tosa and Tang Fob Sint call for merciless extermination of foreigners. Consul Goodnow in Shanghai says the insurrectionary movement is expanding and a strong force is needed to check rival armies in the north and aid southern viceroys.
Bryan the Other Kan curious line. William Jennings Bryan was nominated for president by acclamation at the Silver Republican convention in Kansas City. Chairman Brown opened the meeting after 1 p.m. The resolutions committee reported a platform that was adopted. Senator Teller nominated Bryan in a brief but eloquent speech, followed by long cheering. The nomination was confirmed by acclamation after several seconds.
A deadly blaze at the Standard Oil works in Constable Hook Bayonne New Jersey caused over 2.5 million dollars in damage. Twenty large oil tanks and many structures were destroyed as flames spread to a 100 acre area. A lightning bolt ignited the fire at 1245 am yesterday and two tanks exploded later. A worker risked life to attach a pipe and drain hot oil from a tank to avert a wider catastrophe. Also notes P D Armour travels to Pavia for the Paris Exposition after curing in Nauchelin.
