A hungry crowd packs the arena as gates open for a scheduled ring event at 2, Coast Time. Reported early signs and sounds set the scene for a highly anticipated confrontation.
Defending champion John Johnson a.k.a. Jack Johnson from Chicago born Galveston Texas March 31 1878 weighs about 208 pounds. Challenger James J Jeffries of Los Angeles born Carroll Ohio April 15 18?? weighs about 220 pounds. Reno Nevada venue 1:30 pm Rock Island time 3:00 pm. Forty five rounds in a 22 foot ring with five ounce gloves. Purse 101000 with 7 percent to winner and 25 percent to loser plus bonuses and film rights totaling over 140000 for Johnson and over 154000 for Jeffries. Estimated attendance 13000 receipts 200000 to 250000 promoter profits about 40000. Betting 100 to 65 in Jeffries favor.

Rheims France July 4 Charley Wachter a French aviator was killed in a 500 foot fall after his monoplane collapsed during graceful air circles watched by thousands. He died on impact as his head was driven into the earth after a dramatic display. Also at Aurora Illinois July 4 George D Ingersoll of Joliet was killed instantly when his car overturned three miles south of Aurora injuring his wife and a friend likely to prove fatal.
Indianapolis July 4 Marquette Buick and Dawson with a Marmon contested the 100 mile race for 301 to 450 displacement. Burnam won by five seconds setting a class record 1:20:55.6, three minutes faster than the previous mark. Louis Chevrolet's Marmon claimed the 10 mile record for 161 to 220 displacement dropping to 8:55. In 231 to 300 inches class a Marmot Buick with Marquette Buick won in 3:08.37, six seconds under the old record. Entering the 10 mile race for 301 to 430 inches driving a Marquette Buick, he won at 7:54.86, two seconds quicker than the former best.
Chicago reports a calm Fourth of July with 65 degrees and few injuries or fires. A large parade drew thousands along the route while 3,000 regular army troops camped on the lakefront for a military tournament that evening. Seats for 40,000 were provided and Mayor McCaskrin traveled to Rantoul to deliver the Independence Day address.
Washington July 2 Champ Clark, Minority Leader, says President Taft claims omnipotence over Congress but wastes public money. He cites fiscal year totals 1910 1 044 billion and 1911 about 1 058 billion an increase of 14 million. Clark recalls Aldrich remarks a businessman could run government cheaper by 300 million annually. He notes Taft aimed to save 100 million yearly but critics doubt the economy pledge. A private cablegram from Blue fields reports General Matuty has been executed after a court martial for treason. He played a leading role as an Estrada general at the December battle of El Recreo and was arrested in April on treason charges.
President Taft postpones a ten day vacation after a late Saturday telegram. Secretary Norton failed to keep business away, and Taft summoned Secretary Ballinger to Beverly Tuesday morning for what is expected to be an all-day conference.
Duncan McDonald, secretary treasurer of the Illinois United Mine Workers, says the Illinois Operators' Association would meet a miners committee in Chicago at 2 PM on Wednesday July 6 to discuss reaching an agreement on the mine situation.
Chief Justice Melville W. Fuller of the United States Supreme Court died of heart failure at his Sorrento summer home in Bar Harbor Maine. He was 78, with daughter Mrs Nathaniel Framus and Rev James E Freeman at his side. Interment will be in Chicago. Fuller, born 1833 in Augusta Maine, rose to editor and city attorney before practicing law in Chicago for 82 years and serving as chief justice from 1888 until his death. He swore in presidents Garfield Arthur Cleveland McKinley Roosevelt Taft after his appointment.
Peoria has been awarded the Illinois national guard encampment for eight days from August 20 to 28. It will assemble 6,000 guardsmen plus officers and 1,500 horses, a first time for a single all guardsmen encampment. Rock Island was also considered. Danville bid strongly with a $10,000 offer and a site.
