In reply to attacks on Speaker Champ Clark the House passed a unanimous resolution expressing full confidence in the presiding officer. The debate included strong attacks on Bryan allies and plutocrats, with Stanchfield voting for Wilson and New York's role noted. Ballot tallies show Clark leading as the convention progressed, and railroad tickets were extended amid the roll call.
Oyster Bay July 1 Robert R. McCormick of Chicago leader of the Illinois delegation for Roosevelt at the republican convention arrived at Oyster Bay to say Governor Deneen of Illinois who joined Taft could not carry his state. He stated he came to open negotiations with the colonel as an emissary from Republican organization members. He added Taft cannot carry Illinois.
El Paso July 1 Colonel Herrera of the rebel garrison at Guarez reports a federal troop train was blown up by rebels in Chihuahua. The blast killed all troops aboard the 20 coaches as the federals, attempting to enter the Pass, triggered mines laid by rebels during contact.
The Hymelia crevasse floods recede in New Orleans leaving about 2,000 refugees homeless and in need of shelter. Hundreds are housed at nearby points including the United States naval facility while rescue workers aid a half breed Cherokee named Mike Walsh and his squaw who were found on a raft from Southern Oklahoma. Walsh is injured with a fractured leg and both are undernourished as relief efforts continue.
Chicago July 1 David R Anderson 51 president of Marvin Smith & Co stove manufacturers shot and killed himself at his home in Wilmette. Worry over financial difficulties that caused a physical breakdown is believed to have prompted the deed. Washington July 1 President and Mrs Taft left for Philadelphia to attend the National Saengerfest. Before departure the president signed a congressional resolution extending appropriations through the current year.
Baltimore July 1 The day of rest was one of the busiest the democrats experienced since the convention opened. All prepared for the renewal of the contest today with an uncertain outcome. Clark's letter denouncing Bryan's charges that New York vote obliged the speaker is expected to win back lost votes. Clark managers say neither side will yield enough to change the conditions when the convention adjourned Saturday night. Clark determined to stick to the fight and delegations were urged to remain firm until nomination.
Washington report notes California progressive Republican leader denounced Taft as unlawfully secured for renomination. He argued the Republican party should face defeat for its leaders' sins and consider reform or a new stance in four years. The speech called for an inquiry into campaign contributions and expenditures.
Washington July 1 The interstate commerce commission ordered a reduction in freight rates on flour from Minneapolis and other northwest points to the Atlantic seaboard, in a decision known as the Flour City Case.
The United States captured the clay bird shooting event at the Olympic games with a total score of 53. Great Britain finished with 511 and Germany with 510.
