In Mediapolis Iowa on July 1 the 105 mile Burlington and Northwestern railway narrow gauge line from Spennington to Oskaloosa was widened to standard width in under nine hours. Under rain and adverse conditions 446 workers relaid track at about one rail per minute. Trains left Burlington at 4 am and Oskaloosa three hours earlier with the first reaching Burlington at 4 20 and Oskaloosa at 8 30. The line is a branch of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy system.
