A ship rammed and sank another in thick fog off Nantucket. Four men perished while 86 survivors were rescued after the collision. a Nantucket survivor reported the icy waters and the chaotic scene as rescue boats arrived.
The Monroe vanished after a collision with the Nantucket in fog 200 miles southeast of Hog Island. Forty eight lives were lost with 31 passengers and 55 crew saved by the Nantucket, while the Monroe’s list of dead includes Mrs. W. L. Holton and several Marlow Theatrical Company members among others. The Nantucket rescued survivors and conveyed the injured to Norfolk. a full investigation was ordered.
A boiler explosion sparked a blaze that destroyed the new Bedford apartment building in Chicago on January 30. The fire caused an estimated 300 tenants to flee into the streets, with no fatalities reported.
San Diego reports that P W Harwood of Oakland and Mortimer Miller were reported led out of Tijuana under guard by Mexican federals and are believed dead in the mountains after a foiled fugitive case. The note, signed by Harwood, railed at reformers and condemned the American Federation of Labor as reactionary. McDonald took the blame for the quoted statements.

Indianapolis January 30 Samuel Gompers denied a charge by Duncan McDonald that he was gloriously drunk at the Seattle AFL convention. The exchange sparked uproar as McDonald accused booze fighters of leading AFL. Gompers called the claim libelous and slanderous. He reaffirmed commitment to labor movement and rejected accusations of a machine to retain office.
John D. Young former deputy building commissioner of East St Louis Illinois was found not guilty of embezzling municipal funds by a jury after 32 hours of deliberation. He was the first of 26 present and former East St Louis officials tried on graft charges prosecuted by State's Attorney Webb.
