Chicago January 26 The federal grand jury began the beef trust inquiry with C C Snow secretary treasurer National Packing as the first witness. About 30 subpoenas were served at National Packing Armour Swift Morris offices. Eight hundred subpoenas issued yesterday to summon witnesses nationwide. Names not divulged. aim to call anyone connected with packing houses who can shed light on the matter.

State mine inspectors announced the St. Paul mine at Cherry will likely reopen on Monday to recover 210 bodies remaining from last fall's deadly fire. They tested temperature air pressure and gas mixtures and found the interior workable by next week despite slightly high temperatures.

Springfield dispatch reports the Panama canal libel case ends as federal court quashes the indictment against the Press Publishing Co. The ruling cites lack of federal jurisdiction and other legal grounds, effectively closing the case.
In Brooklyn a riot involving up to 100 people broke out after a clash between striking shirtwaist workers and non union girls. Clubs and blackjacks were used, about a score of people were injured and four girls were arrested.
Senate passed the fortifications bill carrying 5,517,200 and moved to a new national forest in Montana but took no action. The senate adjourned at 2 15. House heard denials by Mr Bennet of New York of charges by Mr Macon of Arkansas of extravagance by the immigration commission. Macon refused to retract and the debate grew torrid. The house passed a bill creating a bureau of mines in the interior department and adjourned at 30.
Berlin Jan. 26 The foreign office reply declines the United States proposal to defer Germany’s general tariff application on American imports until March 31. The suggestion for delay appears not accepted.
Franchises on seven productive Cleveland street car lines expired yesterday but lines will continue. Fare lowered from 5 to 3 cents starting at midnight. Last summer residents voted down a 3 cent franchise proposed by ex mayor Tom L. Johnson. Receiver Bicknell to operate at the reduced rate until a refer endum on a new blanket franchise.
New York report says the merger of the Butte copper properties is expected this afternoon by Anaconda. It is anticipated the Butte and Guggenheim copper interests will consolidate to control U.S. copper output. In Trenton judges dissolved a preliminary injunction blocking Utah Copper stockholders from voting on merging with Boston Consolidated Copper. The two-day hearing addressed Sherman anti trust concerns raised by stockholders Enos A. Wall and Charles W. Graham claiming injury to Tiah Company and violation of law.
