Illinois 100 Year Old Mary Roe Keeps Needlework Legacy

Mrs. Mary Roe, born Mary Barber in Norwich New York, marked her 100th birthday at her daughter’s home near St Augustine Illinois. She came to Illinois in 1838 when Vandalia was state capital and Knox county was prairie. Surrounded by family she recalled pioneer hardships and spun and wove clothing for 150 descendants across 12 states. A year ago she broke her left arm.

Conspirators In Pleas Of Guilty In Prairie Creek Case

Seven defendants in the Prairie Creek coal mine conspiracy pleaded guilty in federal court in Fort Smith Arkansas. Peter Stewart former UMW district 21 president and Fred Holt former district secretary were among the pleas for conspiracy against the government. Others included J B Namara Hartford city council member James Sleakard Hartford constable and three miners. Government entered nolle prosequi in W W Roberts Mans filed telephone manager and 11 others. The action likely ends the long trouble in the Prairie Creek mining district.

Trial Baseball Suit Is Startled By Federal League Case

Chicago Jan 20 Trial of the Federal league suit against organized baseball began in United States district court before a large crowd. Federal league attorney Addington opened by attacking the national baseball commission asserting it wields judicial executive and legislative powers. He cited the national agreement rules showing how the American and National leagues and the commission regulate relations with minor leagues.

Cardinal Mercier protests German treatment in Belgium

London cabling notes Cardinal Mercier has filed a formal protest against German authorities in Belgium. In a dated January 10 letter to priests, he recounts soldiers seizing his pastoral letter, forbidding reading it to congregations, and summoning him before the governor general. He says his rights as Belgian citizen and clergyman were violated and praises his parishioners for dutiful conduct.

Doris Vaughn Darnell was granted an absolute divorce from Rev. James Morrison Darnell in Chicago. She received 300 dollars alimony and 100 dollars for solicitors fees while court costs were charged to the defendant. Distiller Ledowsky Ends Life Amid Forgery Probe

Charles Ledowsky president of Fox River Distilling Co Chicago shot himself on a Michigan Central train from Syracuse as creditors seek bankruptcy relief. He allegedly forged warehouse receipts for 250000 and disposed of them via banks leading to losses for two Chicago banks. An inquest was begun after his body was moved to undertaker rooms. A letter reportedly claims he acted alone while another Chicago man discounted papers and took 25000.
