Council Bluffs January 17 George F. Smith father of the local congressman was found dead early today in a room at the Ogden hotel. He is believed to have accidentally suffocated by gas. He was 74 years old.

A Youngstown case will set precedent for others and suits against the Montreal firm are planned. Health Commissioner Reynolds reports Chicago that analyses show St. Louis could obtain purer water from the Illinois river, into which the sanitary canal drains, than from its current source. Chicago officials deny that drainage canal plans drive any water system changes and anticipate if damages are pursued, Chicago is prepared to respond.

Beall claims the Western Baseball League should be fought to a finish.
In Victor Colorado a fierce 400 foot underground fight at the Independence mine on Battle Mountain left sixty to seventy involved, with Lew Glocker shot twice but not fatally. Thieves suspected of systematic sylvanite looting escaped as company guards retreated toward the main shaft.
A brilliant meteor lit the Nebraska and Kansas border Tuesday evening, illuminating Beaver City for seconds and creating a thunderlike crash at impact. Railroad workers say the meteor struck near Atwood Kansas, causing panic in the vicinity.
In Des Moines on Wednesday the Democratic general assembly caucus nominated Judge B. H. Thayer of Clinton and ex-Representative John J. Senator Lambert presided. the silver faction was in the minority and Thayer is a sound money Democrat while Seerley is not a 16 to 1 supporter. T. J. Philips of Ottumwa and a Cedar Falls normal trustee nomination were also decided.
In Elkhart county Indiana a 135 year old man known as ver yburn dies following a stroke with no medical aid sought by his wife and three stepsons. Neighbors claim extreme parsimony despite funds for care, and the body is buried in a potter s field sparking community outrage. The veteran had a $2000 back pension and a $17 monthly pension. Also in Kentucky a Schley resolutions vote praised Admiral Schley while Republicans balked at condemning the court of inquiry. London reports a rumored permanent bodyguard for King Edward to be stationed in London using Indian cavalry.
In Coffeen on January 17 a horse and buggy found at a livery barn contained Gerry Clifford aged 23 from Donnelson and Fred Brockman aged 20 son of Hiram Brockman Coffeen. Clifford was dead from a bullet to the temple Brockman had two self inflicted gunshot wounds and is not expected to survive A letter in the buggy explains the matter but the coroner has yet to arrive and the contents are not public.
