Washington January 16. The river and harbor appropriation bill carries 24 million dollars and thus far has no major item changed. It moves before the house today with a possible passage before adjournment tonight.
James Morrison Darnell, the “much married minister,” may be ordered before County Judge Scully for a sanity investigation. Four women have been found who he allegedly married or pretended to marry. State and federal authorities probe possible bigamy and violations of the Mann Act. Doris Vaughn Darnell seeks divorce as Darnell asserts ties to a Chicago wife.
Wheat futures tumbled in early trading as reports floated that Congress might ban exports. May wheat fell from 1.45 to 1.40 as bulls fled amid stop loss orders, then rebounded somewhat as large houses bought. President Wilson ordered an AG probe into price rises and legal violations. Separate reports noted casualties and disrupted relief efforts from damages and disasters.

Affidavits filed in Chicago allege the Federal league seeks the shield of organized baseball while independents claim it is a trust. The documents include two dozen items from the defendants' side. Walter Rossingar, Michigan first baseman, has been signed by the Chicago Federals.
In Elgin Illinois on January 16 an orderly evacuation of eighteen hundred residents and staff occurred as a fire broke out in a separate building. The blaze caused only minor damage and no injuries were reported.
The United States warns Venustiano Carranza that seizing foreign oil plants in Tampico could trigger serious consequences. British concerns fear loss of fuel as the Carranza regime imposes heavy taxes and embargoes, shutting down Tampico plants.
