British forces reportedly stormed positions around Lodyerath as capitulation expectations rose near Renes berg Vienna. Daily dispatches describe British advances under artillery cover with New Zealand troops delivering a decisive dash and Boer positions yielding ground.
Washington Jan 13 Senate commerce committee hearings begin in a push to expand foreign ship tonnage and accelerate merchant vessels. Witnesses including Louis Nixon and Charles Clark son of Senator Clark discuss funds and influence in the Clark and Edmunds investigations.
An editor letters case shows a candidate seeking votes for Clark under Blackford management. Clark replies that the matter is left to Blackford, with plans to confer and ensure anyone who served big is amply rewarded.
In Philadelphia Virginia January 18 a Republican sub committee of the national campaign committee surveys ground for the national convention. Hanna names prosperity for workers and retention of the Philippines as the key national issues. He notes funds are needed immediately to support campaign work. The Democratic party is accused of labor agitation in the West and the response is to counteract it at every point.
The Italian government demands punishment for the lynching of five Italians in Tiiofali La last spring. Previously compensation was paid, but the current demand seeks legal accountability. The U S national government finds itself largely unable to act under existing law, leaving the matter to state authorities.
Avices from Cebu describe a fierce engagement as insurgents occupy a strong position in the Cadigan mountains. The army reportedly routed them with four Americans wounded. Gen Flores with 100 men attacked the insurgents at Hemingan, Nueva Vizcaya, scattering them. The Americans occupied Magallanes, Cavite, capturing 20 insurgents.

Jan. 13 Faluburg Ohio NK Gass a leading merchant was killed after detecting burglars in his store. Suspects may be French. In Denver Colorado Jan 13 H M W Tan mon owner of the Denver Post was shot in his office by W W Anderson an attorney. Anderson also shot Frederick G Bonds. Both publishers were severely wounded.
