The McCumber service pension bill clears the Senate without division, extending $12 monthly to Civil and Mexican War survivors at age 62, with $15 at 70 and $20 at 75. Amendments add Mexican War survivors and ban pension attorney fees, projecting annual costs between $10 and $60 million.
Mysterious bomb explodes on Vassilly island in St Petersburg harming no one as English families reside nearby. Lieutenant General Pavloff, St Petersburg military procurator, executed at Lasynos near Cronstadt after refusing sacraments, his head kept for possible ID by police. Budget for 1907 set at 1.55 billion rubles, up from 1.255 billion. Epifanoff, who attempted to kill a Grand Duchess Elizabeth’s household master, is drum head court martialed and executed.
Philadelphia January 11 The Morocco manufacturers of the national association in annual meeting here decided to advance the price of glazed kid. The rise is attributed to higher raw material costs including a 15 to 20 percent goat skin increase and higher wages and chemical costs in production.
New York dispatch reports 100 workers believed entombed by a cavein at the Schloss mines in Calhoun county Alabama. Sheffield Alabama notes no information locally about the incident as of January 11.
Lansing Jan 11 Congressman William Alden Smith of Grand Rapids won the Michigan senatorial nomination after a dramatic caucus. Governor Warner, from Farmington, attacked Arthur Hill of Saginaw for alleged campaign money use, prompting bids for an investigation. The contest exposed party tensions and established Warner’s political influence.
Washington January 11 all Baltimore and Ohio employees held by the coroner jury as jointly responsible for the Terra Cotta Washington wreck except operator Dutrow were released on bail.
President Tucker of the Jamestown exposition board received letters and telegraphs from nearly all advisory committee members except those who signed protests against undue military and naval prominence in the government exhibit. St Paul reporting rail officials say western North Dakota endures one of its heaviest snowstorms in history with trains blocked and tracks lost under deep snow overhangs.
New York report states Pennsylvania Railroad stockholders will vote March 12 to authorize up to 100 million dollars in capital stock and 100 million dollars in bonds. Management says no major improvements planned, authorizing increase for emergencies. The announcement caused stock declines of 1 to 4 points before a partial recovery as orders and profit taking occurred.
A blaze in Lancaster Pennsylvania began at Moss & Co tobacco warehouse and spread to adjacent properties. By the time crews arrived the fire was out of control, burning the American Cigar Company warehouse and several fire dwellings, with estimated losses around one million dollars.
Two chancery suits were filed to stop the proposed merger of United States Leather and Central Leather. A writ to show cause why the merger should not be enjoined was returnable in Newark next Monday.

In Wilmington Illinois, a Woodmen hall gas plant exploded during a card party. Two men, grocer F. H. Pope and Edward Schneiber, were killed instantly while repairing a leaking gas line. Several others were seriously injured, including Father Dwyer, Rose Heck, Mrs. James Cavanaugh.
The New York appellate division affirmed Justice MacLean’s April 30 1906 order to preserve the ballot boxes from the last mayoralty election. The ruling favors Hearst and enforces the preservation order, denying any Roosevelt endorsement.

In Chicago on January 11 Judge ruled that Shea may testify only in reply to specific questions. Defense had sought a general history of the strike and related incidents from start to finish. The state objected, contending such testimony would reopen items already ruled out by the court. Shea was asked one question and allowed to depart. The defense then proclaimed its case finished.
R T Booker, a Scottsville II student in the Kentucky university divinity college, fell unconscious during hypnosis Wednesday night and remains in critical condition in a dormitory. Miss Ray McCarvey failed to break the spell fully. doctors call the case peculiar and attribute the trouble to excitement.
Effie Henderson of Sioux City Iowa won the prettiest woman prize at the St Louis exposition and now married Floyd R Wilson a dining car conductor who fell in love with her picture. The couple met in Hot Springs South Carolina and a railroad courtship followed. Wilson once lived in Chicago.
The Tennessee Senate and previously the House adopted a resolution commending President Roosevelt for his stance on the discharge of negro soldiers at Browns ville. Nashville reports the upper house acted today with the lower house following yesterday.
Washington cablegram says President Bonill of Honduras reports revolutionary disturbances completely quelled. Costa Rican minister Calvo relays word from Tegucigalpa, indicating stability after upheaval. The message confirms return to calm in the Central American nation.
Rome reports Observatore Romano prints the pope’s encyclical to French Catholics. It says Catholics must stay united in faith despite government war threats, condemns confiscation laws, and stresses the church serves peace and spiritual duty over worldly upheaval.
Charles City Iowa January 11 Governor Cummins ordered an investigation into the lynching of James Cullen who was hanged from the Cedar River bridge after being taken from jail. The body showed mental irresponsibility and he could not have been sent to gallows for his crime. Prosecution of all involved was ordered. The crowd included over 100 people and four ministers.
Guthrie Oklahoma January 11 the constitutional convention passed a memorial to Congress and President Roosevelt asking to set aside Secretary Hitchcock's ruling that 4 000 000 acres be set aside as a forest reserve in the Choctaw nation. Albert Lindsey dies from molten metal blast at Baldwin locomotive works. Two workers Frank Sakolowsky and Patrick Dolan burned. General R F Patterson dies in St Catherine s Ontario former US consul general at Calcutta and Iowa militia member.
John Smith, one of the men indicted for the murder of Dr. B D Cox, confesses and names James Hargis and Edward Callahan as the mov ing spirits. He says Callahan gave him $100 after the killing, claiming Hargis sent it. The trio allegedly shot Cox, and Smith details the conspiracy and promises of acquittal and a job. Trial of ex-Judge James Hargis postponed by Kentucky court of appeals.
Navy paymaster George M. Lukesh was arrested on drunkenness charges at Valero Cal. He is identified as the man the president seeks to remove from the navy, prompting a December message to Congress requesting power to dismiss officers for cause.
Arthur F. Statter of Washington will be appointed assistant secretary of the treasury to replace Charles Hallam Keep when he retires February 1 to become New York state bank commissioner. In California, the state federation of labor rejected endorsing the Humboldt county boycott against Japanese and Koreans and those who employ them. An alternative resolution praising Humboldt county unions in driving out Chinese was also defeated.
