A major American enterprise in London seeks control of all European water routes for grain and other cargoes from U S island ports to inland European ports. It includes American capital buying several British and other canals as part of the effort.
Springfield, January 11. Miss Caltha Eades planned an audacious trip by arranging a suit of masculine clothes from a local tailor, getting her hair cut and styled in a manly way, and coordinating with Nathaniel G. Henderson to purchase the outfit. She visited the shop twice to try on the garments before wearing them away, with the suit made in September and a hairdresser aiding the disguise.
Jimi Mays a black man charged with assaulting a white girl was taken from jail by a mob and hanged to a tree in the Springfield high school yard. The event occurred Wednesday and the girl's name is kept secret.
The ex tradition treaty between Chili and the United States has been approved by the Chilian congress. In other dispatches Mrs. Everson was saved from death after her clothes caught fire, William Tompkin killed himself following an attempted attack on his granddaughter, and postal officials renamed Metropolis City to Metropolis to reduce confusion. Also noted was hog breeder John Stover losing 1,000 dollars worth of Berkshire hogs after a cholera outbreak, with Purdue University being referenced in the next item.

Senator Quay arrived in Washington after a Florida trip for his health. He told the president his condition has improved and he denies plans to retire from the Senate.
In Kalamazoo Michigan on January 11 a Food Commissioner Snow probe led to the arrest of Charles H Thompson claim agent of Hammond Packing Company Hammond Indiana. He is accused of offering bribes to stop prosecutions over oleomargarine sales. Snow’s alertness followed a suspicious telegram signed Bates and a later offer from a Hammond contact named Joris. Snow moved to prosecute the Michigan Produce Company and Thompson was arrested amid the investigation into alleged crookedness in the department.
Mamagua Jan 11 The government of Nicaragua has arrested Gen Vasquez former president of Honduras on board the South American Steamship company steamer Tuempel Charged with trying to incite a revolution against President Zelaya who drove Vasquez from the Honduran presidency in 1894 for the same offense
In Ripley County two strangers visited farmer Linnie and offered a high priced electric battery contract. They claimed a special rate of five dollars but used a mail theft trick to swap his agreement for a $1000 “piping” contract. After pressure they settled for five dollars.
Michigan university team defeated Northwestern in the Central Debating League semi final with nine team members named. The central issue was compulsory arbitration in the United States and Michigan held the affirmative.
Inter state commerce commissioners spent six hours examining seven witnesses on grain rates from Western points to the Atlantic and eastern destinations. John A. Robinson of Hall & Robinson admitted a rate 3 to 5 cents per 100 lower than the published tariff was set by Missouri Pacific. The hearing noted discrimination against Kansas City due to arbitrary grain rates while expectations of major confessions from railroad officials faded. Only three commissioners attended the session in Kansas City.

The women were taken to a hospital. both are reported gravely wounded and may die. Cheney had a troubled marriage and prior brushes with crime.
In Topeka Kansas on January 11 the Supreme Court decided the Parker Hughes mayoralty contest in favor of Albert Parker the Democratic challenger.
A Cologne Gazette report from Berlin dated January 11 outlines an explanation for the murder of Dr. Menke and his German expedition party by St Mathews island natives in the Bismarck Archipelago. Natives defended their remaining palm trees as destruction of scarce resources spurred the fatal clash. The German punitive expedition aboard the cruiser Cormoran reportedly killed eighty one islanders. The note ends with a sharp rebuke of colonial policy.
A plot to win Livingston’s release from the Montana penitentiary by forged signatures collapsed. The petition claimed Livingston hailed from a New York family and had Rough Rider service common names like Roosevelt Belmont Grant Edison Astor Morgan, all of whom denied signing. Governor Toole alerted by President Roosevelt’s letter, then contacted Parkhurst Belmont Grant and others to verify signatures, who all denied involvement.

Lincoln Neb Jan 11 district Judge Thompson adjourned court for ninety days to allow depositions in a multistate probate dispute over Stephen B Miles who died in 1888 at Falls City. His son Joseph received the bulk of the fortune under a 1878 will, while heirs argue a 1897 will may exist. Paul T Gadsden, a St Louis lawyer later Mexico based, testified he drafted the later will.
C F Bidwell of Toledo Ohio demonstrated a new telephone system on a moving electric car in Muskegon Michigan. The invention uses a second wire and trolley pole allowing calls between moving cars and stationary stations or homes along the line. The system works on both steam and electric roads and enables talking while traveling at full speed to people in other cars on the same line.
Manila report says Colinel Marisagan Major Cabrera and a renegade priest Castillo surrendered unconditionally to General Bell. They led Tonei district, from Banan to Guemoa, with about 160 guns expected to be turned in on Monday. Small engagements continue daily as troops capture men and arms.
