Springfield Jan 7 Judge Yates says reports claiming his neutrality as speakership implies stance on the senator race are false. He denies interfering and stresses aims to secure a fair senate organization and avoid meddling in the United States senatorship.
Carl Morton vice president of Glucose Sugar Company and plant manager at Waokegss Illinois died this morning from complications. He was one of Sterling Morton’s notable Nebraska natives and the obituary notes his long lineage and ties to Nebraska.
The funeral of Bishop W. X. Ninds of the M. E. church was held at his late residence then moved to Central M. E. church. He lay in state for two hours as people from all classes and creeds viewed the body. Bishop Walden Bishop Andrews and Bishop Joyce spoke, praising the churchman’s work before the remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery vault.
A Model City residence of Edward H. Taylor burned this morning. Mrs Taylor and three young children perished in the blaze. Taylor himself survived, with a special report noting the tragedy near Lewiston.
Washington reports the Turkish government provided Dr. Thomas North with traveling papers to take up his post at Harpsort as United States consul, indicating Turkey may yield on the issue.

Terribly shocking crime reports a 14 year old Florence Chidester killed by her year old brother Thomas while parents away trading in Marietta. The violent act left the family prostrate with the mother possibly dying from shock. Also noted is the death of Philip Danforth Armour in Chicago from pneumonia. Armour, born 1852 in Stockbridge New York, made a fortune in gold mining and later became a prominent packer. He leaves a wife and one son.
London reports Lord Kitchener’s dispatch from January 7 recounts engagement near Nauwpoort where Babington’s and Steenkamp’s forces were repelled. Casualties listed include Lieut Laing and 15 men killed, two officers and 20 men wounded. Prisoner Duprese captured. Boer losses 20 killed or wounded. New York sugar prices rose 10 points.
