A New York subway fire caused by an explosion or dense smoke overwhelmed passengers and crew. Police and fire officials reported one confirmed death, with hundreds treated or evacuated as fire crews battled flames through Port Authority tunnels and multiple stations.
In the fed yesterday Carl E. Per plead guilty to a charge of circulating scurrilous and defamatory matter through the mails. He was fined $100 and costs by Judge Hamptee. New York Jan 6 Twenty three German spies were found within Canadian troops en route to England last fall. Charles Walter of Toronto, returning from England, said he helped identify the prisoners and secure their arrests. One alleged spy was killed by troops before capture.

James McRell pioneer resident of Burns township died Sunday evening at his son William Merell's Cambridge home. Born March 26, 1836 in Dondonderry Ireland, his family moved to the United States in 1848 and later settled in Burns township. He married Rachel Brown in 1869, who died in 1863, producing two children. A later marriage to Elizabeth Girkin yielded four sons and one daughter, now two sons named William Cambridge James St James Minn Charles Rochester Minn Robert Eugene Oregon.
