Eureka California January 5 the iron screw steamer Walla Walla sailing from San Francisco to Puget Sound sank after a collision with an unknown sailing vessel. Dispatch rescued 60 passengers and crew. about 27 missing, 40 believed lost. The wreck occurred 22 miles south of Mendocino Bay. The Walla Walla carried 26 first class and 25 second class passengers and 9 crew. The ship was owned by the Pacific Coast Steamship Co and long operated between Puget Sound and San Francisco.
