Trainmen Seek New Ballot Law

Illinois legislative board of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen elected A. D. Burbank as chairman N. B. Jones as vice chairman and W. A. Robinson as secretary. They adopted resolutions urging an eight hour law for railroad employees and an absentee voters certificate to protect voting rights for on duty train workers. They also support a clearance bill, a steel framed caboose to replace box cars, and a law allowing injured workers to sue in any state where the carrier conducts business.

Dawes Shelter Opens Chicago Homeless Hotel

In Chicago on January 2 the Rufus Dawes hotel, the city’s first endowed home for unemployed men, opened to capacity. Charles G. Dawes attended as guests bathed before being admitted, receiving nightwear and slippers while lockers were sterilized. The tribute hotel, built in memory of Dawes’s late son, housed about 205 men and featured beds, baths, and segregated logoremedial setups.
