Evarts Dies After Brilliant Public Service Career

New York Feb 28 Ex Secretary William M Evarts died at his home this morning at age 33 though the obituary notes a long illness with pneumonia. Born in Boston Feb 6 1818 he rose to Yale at 19 and to New York bar at 22. He defended Johnson during impeachment proceedings and served as attorney general. He later became secretary of state under Hayes and was United States senator from New York in 1885 before retiring.
