Gondo Switzerland February 24 The piercing of the Simplon tunnel through the Alps was completed at 7 30 this is one of the greatest engineering achievements of the age. The tunnel length from Briga Switzerland to Iselle on the Italian side is about 12 miles. Work began over seven years ago. Contract requires traffic by May 15. The Swiss and Italian governments jointly financed the project at a cost of 15000000.
