Washington Feb 20 The house committee on interstate and foreign commerce voted unanimously to report favorably on the Tillman resolution as amended by a sub committee The amended measure calls for an investigation by the Interstate Commerce Commission into railroad discriminations and monopolies in coal and oil The compromise blends Tillman Gillespie and Campbell resolutions The house adjourned today out of respect for Representative George A Castor of Pennsylvania.
William Morris, 95, a Bloomington, Illinois wealthy citizen and cousin of Gen Lew Wallace, was robbed of 460 dollars and a watch and maltreated by highwaymen in Des Moines. He wandered into Iowa City exhausted after a trek from Oxford and 15 miles of walking, appearing in a hotel lobby bruised and in rags. He recalls wartime service in the Mexican War and says he is mentally strong despite his age.
More than 400 prominent Omaha women gathered to denounce the Pat Crowe acquittal in the $25,000 kidnapping of E A Cudahy’s son five years ago. The gathering signaled a precursor to a larger civic protest and potential future meeting. South Bend Indiana February 20 three children eight to eleven years old died from burns after an explosion while attempting to light a fire with gasoline. A girl ran home with flames in her clothing and the others were found rolling in water in a field. Also reported nearby a fatal head on collision on the Iowa Central near Eldora killedEngineer Willard and Brakeman Shehan with Fireman Rogers injured. Julia Ward Howe ill in Boston and British Vice Admiral Sir Harry Grenfell dead in London.
Washington, Feb. 20. Justice White delivers a ruling broadening the interstate commerce act, holding a railroad cannot own coal and sell below market to indirectly rebate transport costs. The decision supports pending rate regulation legislation and enjoins the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad from selling coal at less than published rates. Denver reports Detective McParland denies Orchard confession claims while outlining alleged Western Federation plots and related murders.
Four infantry companies departed Governor's Island for the Philippines by way of New Orleans and San Francisco. A gas explosion at the Maitland mine of Victor Fuel Company in Walsenburg Colorado on February 19 caused at least 18 deaths and risk of higher toll as rock falls blocked further search. The blast shook the ground for miles and left unclear how many remain trapped.

Budapest February 20 The Official Gazette published notification of Royal Commissioner General Nyari upholding the legality of yesterday's dissolution of the Hungarian parliament and warning deputies that any attempt to hold a sitting of the house convened for tomorrow will be prevented by armed force.
The Illinois miners convention met today in Springfield and Secretary Ryan urged against accepting President Roosevelt's intervention if a wage strike occurs.
Des Moines reports Gov. A B Cummins announced his candidacy for a new term with a vow to fight corporations, especially railroads. He argued government efforts to curb corporate power create the era's vital issue, describing monopolies, rate discrimination, and the need for fair regulation against railroad and industrial entities. The governor warned corporations aim to defeat regulations and control state power, urging the people to decide who will master regulation.
New York police probe a murder of actress Gussie Hart in a carriage scene fuelled by a Nan Patterson like mystery. Hart skull fractured, several associates vanish. Edward Murphy a dancing master is questioned after claiming to accompany Hart to Little Savoy cafe and later aiding her to a cab and room. Hart, about 50, known as a blackface comedienne, has a son in Cincinnati and a recently deceased daughter.
Des Moines reports that a Senate railroad committee subcommittee approved an anti pass bill. It bans state county district and city officers delegates to conventions candidates for office and central committee members from using passes. Editors may use advertising mileage and firemen and shippers with stock or perishables may ride free. Applies to steam railroads and interurbans.
Dr H A Tobey resigned as superintendent of the Toledo State Hospital for the insane after Senate Lamb accused him of intoxication and unfitness. Dr George B Love of Toledo was elected to replace him. Tobey denied the charges as Gov Pattison plans changes at the state hospital, with more resignations expected.
Washington Feb 2 Missouri failed to prove to the U S Supreme Court that the polluted water supply of 81 Lotus was caused by Chicago sewage and the drainage canal case was dismissed. Justice Holmes said the future may bring more evidence but current proof falls short of the bill and the court dismissed without prejudice.
