Rock Island Misses Kewanee Berth in Central Association

Marshalltown won the Kewanee slot at the Central Association midwinter meeting over Rock Island. Three cities advocated for Rock Island Waterloo Muscatine and Burlington fought hard. Four Die in Interurban and Kansas City Train Wrecks

At Indianapolis an interurban collision on slippery rails left four dead and thirty-one injured, with four fatalities unlikely to rise. The deceased are James Hogan, J R Hardy, Fletcher Roark, and Harry Oliver. In Minnesota, a southbound Kansas City Rock Island train derailed near Albert Lea, injuring engineer Reinhart and fireman Thompson along with three passengers.

Alaska Rail Bill Passed by House

Washington DC February 19 the administration Alaskan railroad bill authorizing a 25 million dollar coastal to coal field line passed the house 220 to 87. Senate already approved and conferees to reconcile. The bill ignores a 35 million dollar bond provision and funds construction from treasury current revenues with annual appropriations. The project aims for up to 1000 miles linking southern Pacific harbors to interior waters and a coal field, to aid development and attract settlers. Calumet Fire Inquiry Dropped by Miner Lawyer

O H Hilton representing the Western Federation of Miners told the congressional strike investigating committee no full inquiry into the Calumet fire tragedy was needed and withdrew the request. The probe was near completion with three days left focused on peonage eviction and deportation of President Moyer. Governor Ferris asked State Attorney General Pepper to represent Michigan at the strike hearing and Pepper may serve as judge advocate for the National Guard. California Floods Swamp Los Angeles After Days of Rain

Torrential storms from Tuesday midnight drenched Los Angeles and much of Southern California. Rainfall averaged six to eight inches in about 32 hours, leaving widespread flooding. One boy drowned in the disaster.

Probe of Trade Bodies Is Asked

Washington Feb 19 Charges that the Chicago and Duluth boards of trade and the Minneapolis chamber of commerce are in a combination in restraint of trade were filed in the house by Representative Manahan with a resolution for a congressional investigation. Manahan charged that by acting together the organizations controlled most of the terminal elevators and penthus could fix the price of wheat. He said the Chicago board was managed by a few large operators Ar mours Peavy Rosenbaum and others. The resolution asked for a select committee of seven to examine the grading of wheat operations in the pit selling in futures and other actions.
